I Finally Made it to College

If you’ve heard me speak you know my story about having a full-ride scholarship for basketball to a major university (BYU) when I was in high school and feeling good about my future in the NBA. Suddenly, I was discovered by Mrs. Hall, the choir teacher, who pointed me in the right direction for life, as I left my basketball career on the bench, and became a singing entertainer who speaks and writes books. Going to Las Vegas instead of college was a real big swing of a dream, and thankfully worked out. But I always wondered what it would have been like to get into college. I have spoken at many colleges, to thousands of students, leaders, university presidents, faculty, staff, award-winning teachers, and higher education establishments nationwide, but was never actually in college. Until a few months ago! Here’s what happened.   A few years back I began a venture of making a YouTube channel with a very successful Youtuber & Influencer. We did everything right, by the book, cranked out videos that were specific to certain topics, and recorded them monthly for a good long chunk of time. It was costly, challenging, rewarding, and pushed me

The Ultimate Ski Crash and My Latest Concussion

I Was Having the Best Ski Runs of My Life… Until I Wasn’t I’ve skied my whole life. I grew up in Park City, Utah. Yes, I spent as many days on the mountain as I could through my entire youth. And when I get the chance now, I’m still out there (usually at Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon, SLC, UT) doing what I’ve always loved to do.     I’ll just say it plainly: I’m a very good skier. I like to go fast. I like to push it. I like to feel my legs burn by the end of a run because I’ve gone all in. Is this surprising? I’m The Promise Guy – that means, I’m all in on pretty much everything I do. But the last few times I’d been out skiing, something felt off. My skis were… sticky. Not terrible. Just enough that I noticed it. Enough that I kept thinking: “I really need to wax these.” But like a lot of things we know we should do…I didn’t. Because I didn’t want to take the time. I wanted more runs. More speed. More time on the mountain. Until finally, on this particular day, I

Launch: The Jason Hewlett Show podcast and livestream broadcast

The other day I was scrolling. Ok, I admit: doomscrolling. I got sucked into that vortex of news: negative stories of tragedy, confrontation, arguments, debates, which devolved into anger, sadness and hate rapidly. Realizing I was going on this path, I took a moment to check my algorithm and was amazed at how easily we can be caught up in going down this slippery slope. To cleanse myself of the feeling of ick all over my mind and spirit, I went to happier places: looked up a Mr. Rogers video, Bob Ross painting some clouds, found some spiritually uplifting speeches, gave room for hymnals that inspired, searched for feel good videos and stories that I could share with my children: A boy with mental disabilities suddenly celebrated for hitting 3 pointers in a basketball game; An artist painting with 10 hanging buckets, spinning colors of the rainbow in circles to a giant canvas; A cat massaging and doing chiropractic work on its golden retriever brother…   Then the baby goats showed up, dancing and prancing on benches, backed by Julie Andrews singing “The Sound of Music” and all was right with my world and algorithms. What are you consuming these

200 Pounds Lost: The Legend of My Brother Josh Hewlett

Every now and then, you hear a story that doesn’t just inspire you—it stays with you. This is one of those stories. It’s about my brother, Josh Hewlett.  Josh was born in the mid 1980’s, my second brother, fourth of five kids, and was by far the largest baby in the family. “Big boned” was what Dad used to say. Mom delivered 5 of us little Hewlett’s, and Josh was going to easily outgrow all of us.      By middle school, even though he was 6 years my junior, he was already as tall and weighed more than me.      Josh played football, could pick up a fridge or couch, and was a literal strongman from his youngest years.  But through the years his big boned nature went to a new level of being overweight, and became a great concern for our entire family and all who knew him.      This is the kind of story you may have heard only on TV or in movies, but for us it’s real life, and it’s my brother, so I have to share this extraordinary story of transformation.  It’s a story about health. It’s about humility. And it’s about

I Tore My Jaw On Stage. Now What?

Hi. I make a living opening my mouth – to speak, make people laugh, and sing at the top of my lungs. This unique attribute of opening my mouth extra wide has become so prevalent in my presentations it is known as my Signature Move, and was even once the cover of my book (although that was a terrible choice and has mostly disappeared from the face of the earth, thank goodness). If you find a copy just know it is a rare thing! On December 2, 2025 I was asked to speak to a group of young folks by a very successful friend of mine. I haven’t spoken to youth in a while, for many reasons, but mostly because the style of entertainment I do is so foreign to their TikTok attention spans it is tough to feel like it’s connecting. Well, truth be told, they loved it more than I expected! They were all in with me. I was singing, making them laugh, they were taking notes about The Promise and Signature Moves. The whole time I was thinking wow, maybe I can connect with youth as a speaker still. And then I did the Raptor, as Daddy

Put the Screens Away

“As quickly as this phone can connect you to the world, it can just as easily disconnect you from your family.” – Jason Hewlett     I have spoken many words in my life and career, and hope this quote will be one that will live on as a part of my teachings of The Promise. I am not chosen as the Keynote Speaker of major conferences to bring a message about family to the audience, as most planners can’t justify that to the check writers who are needing top and bottom line results as the leading reason to have a speaker. Within the teachings of Leadership, Teamwork, Accountability, and Inspiration, the audience walks away with practical tools to discover their Promise in their work, with their teams, and within themselves. And then there’s this story, about me as a Dad, working on myself to keep Promises to everyone in business and life…and what about my Family? It all comes down to what we do OFF stage more so than what we do ON stage. I can be great in a sales meeting, under the bright lights, on my stage…but what if I am not working on myself behind the

When The Promise Changes

This blog has been written, without a miss, for a decade, delivered every Sunday without fail. Truthfully, I am stunned I’ve done anything this long, and it’s now time for a new promise. Last week, between BLACK FRIDAY CYBER MONDAY GIVING TUESDAY WHATEVER WEDNESDAY …I received more emails of annoyance from companies, peers, and causes than I could keep up with. I was hitting the UNSUBSCRIBE button so fast, being sent to the outer reaches of “Manage my Profile to End your Subscription” and other daunting tasks placed upon me (“do you want to report this as SPAM?”) to release the grip of consumerism, that I nearly gave up! But I didn’t – and I rid myself of many needless distractions, sales I don’t want to be sold on, charities I’d never heard of but didn’t have any money left to give to (already supporting many others), and probably hurt the feelings of my friends whose email lists they stuck me on because we once emailed each other…and they probably check who drops more than I do. It’s too much information, and if I’m interested I’ll come knocking. What I can say to you, Dear Reader, is that I

The Promise from Italy

This morning I woke up at 5 AM. Sleep eludes me after what I have experienced in Italy. My wife and I, along with our besties, Beau & Courtney Carlson, are in historic Florence, Italy, home of history’s greatest Masters of Art. Yesterday we saw The David by Michelangelo, the day prior we saw The Last Supper in Milan by Leonardo da Vinci. I never thought I would be so blessed to see this in real life. Still can’t believe, and so grateful, they have survived this long. I am at a loss for words writing this blog, as we have driven from one city to the next in this glorious country after picking up our daughter, Ella, who has been an Au Pair (nanny) for the last few months since graduating high school. We head to Rome tomorrow to see more of the greatest works of art in human history, all inspired and guided by the hand of God. As powerful as each are, as overwhelmed as I was standing before these pieces which have inspired my own life’s work and art, weeping at the very sight and thought of what these artists went through to create such glory

Smoke On The Horizon

The monster peeks over the mountain’s peak. Smoke billowing from an other worldly place. We have seen fires before, but never one like this, bearing down, gut-wrenchingly close. Smoke fills our nostrils, burns our eyes. The Yellow Lake Fire spreads chaos and havoc. 33,000 acres, zero containment, it is the biggest forest fire this year in a state infamous for it’s wildfires, decimating the Ashley National Forest, threatening all in it’s path. The roads close 2 miles from our beloved home and family’s legacy, ranchers evacuate, animals flee and fill the valley we call our heritage. As we pack, scramble, choose what can burn and what is irreplaceable, we cry, and the flames just grow higher. We drive frantically away, while those we never knew and won’t ever know, race towards the threat. How many firetrucks did we just count?  More than can even be from our own Utah. We are correct – they have raced to our rescue from all counties, nearby regions, neighboring states. Bravery, courage, volunteers and professionals, armed with hoses, axes, and most importantly: determination to keep The Promise.     Soon 100, now 250, 500…eventually nearly 900 of the bravest and finest among us

Breaking Bad on Labor Day

For those who read this blog, you may be surprised to see me referring to “Breaking Bad”, a TV show known for an extremely heavy, and illegal, array of topics…(of which, if I write the actual words here, this blog will be flagged and banned in certain areas of the world). But you also know I like to draw from many examples to teach The Promise, so here goes one that’s quite a stretch, but had a profound effect on me! It is Labor Day Weekend here in the United States, which was created to celebrate our efforts to work hard through the year, take a break and reflect on the opportunities of our employment, and have a literal hard stop. I confess that I work on every holiday. I enjoy my work, find great pleasure in working hard, and can, with both a tinge of guilt and equally some pride, admit that I have checked emails, texts, and taken calls on every holiday during my career. To me, that is The Promise. And conversely, breaking The Promise as well. Now, with that confession aside, let’s jump to “Breaking Bad”. 15 years ago I watched the first episode, and since
