Put the Screens Away

“As quickly as this phone can connect you to the world, it can just as easily disconnect you from your family.”

– Jason Hewlett

I have spoken many words in my life and career, and hope this quote will be one that will live on as a part of my teachings of The Promise.

I am not chosen as the Keynote Speaker of major conferences to bring a message about family to the audience, as most planners can’t justify that to the check writers who are needing top and bottom line results as the leading reason to have a speaker.

Within the teachings of Leadership, Teamwork, Accountability, and Inspiration, the audience walks away with practical tools to discover their Promise in their work, with their teams, and within themselves.

And then there’s this story, about me as a Dad, working on myself to keep Promises to everyone in business and life…and what about my Family?

It all comes down to what we do OFF stage more so than what we do ON stage.

I can be great in a sales meeting, under the bright lights, on my stage…but what if I am not working on myself behind the scenes and becoming the best version of myself?

As a young Dad, I learned from the help of my loving Wife, Tami, that I was being distracted by my phone as justification for work while missing out on my family growing up before me.

Telling this story was never a part of my plan, but one time I accidentally shared it, within the scope of teaching Promise Leadership for corporations and associations.

After making the audience laugh, think, take notes on improvement at work, the message that most resonated was this one: I was NOT a present father, and needed to adjust a few priorities. I had set a goal to be a better dad, but it wasn’t until I made the Promise to be the kind of Dad any kid would want to have that my life changed.

One by one, fathers came up to me following the speech with tears in their eyes, saying it was the most profound message they’d ever needed at any conference, where they were attending to get business principles and equally walked away with something that changed the way they’d live their life.

So the message within the message is this: Be Present.

The Promise to Be Present with family, with those we love, with those we connect, but mostly with our family and loved ones.

Why do I teach this? Because for me it is one of my greatest challenges and failings. I have to remind myself every single day of my Promise to live it. That’s why I teach it, as I assume it’s tough for others as well. May we all try harder to be a little better.

Be Present.
