Farewell to Ella Rae

We have 4 children ~ 3 boys and 1 girl. Our daughter, Ella Rae, is the oldest, just barely a year older than Redford, who is Irish twins with Romney, and Royal came a few years later. As I joke in my presentations, “We had 4 kids in 5 years…a Utah tradition.”     My beautiful baby girl, and now grown up daughter, Ella Rae Hewlett (20), has recently been set apart as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She will join her younger brothers in the mission field, Redford (19) in Santa Fe, Argentina, and Romney (18) in Antigua, Guatemala. She will serve for 18 months in the Lima Limatambo Peru Mission. Her brothers serve for 2 years. Her new title will be Hermana Hewlett, as her brothers are both Elder Hewlett (and you can only fathom how our tricky last name is pronounced by strangers in Spanish…hilarious…usually “Emlich” or “Heblet”).     We will not see them in person for the duration of their service, as visiting your kids is not allowed. They are totally dedicated and focused on service, from dawn to dusk, living with a companion (selected by a

The ETA on CEP from NSA is ASAP

There are so many acronyms nowadays its tough to know which ones not to use. IYKYK Thankfully, an organization I have belonged to for over 20 years, the National Speakers Association, has put together a new designation that is yet another acronym worth knowing: CEP – Certified Emcee Professional     I am pleased to be recognized in the CEP Charter Group along with some of my outstanding Emcee peers: Quinn Conyers Tom Pesce Rob Ferre Dr. Genie Snyder     To earn this designation I documented: • 100+ events over five years, with client names, dates and fees • 10 client evaluations, scored by the people who hired me • Video from real stages, not a sizzle reel • Verified income from emcee work across multiple years Emceeing and hosting events is a discipline, and shouldn’t ever really be left to someone on your team (unless they’re incredible at it, which is ridiculously rare). Executives need to have their moment to shine, and not be seen so much handling hosting duties that it becomes a “no longer special moment” to the audience every time the Executive takes the stage. The more you give them their spots, as an

Did AI Write This Post or Did I?

Let me guess. You can easily determine between what is written by AI and what’s not. You take great pride in this ability. You catch it in your feed before the hundreds who commented using bots as their autoresponder. So the question is this: Did AI write this post or did I? I assume you’ll be able to easily know by the end, if you read that far. Or perhaps you’ve already figured it out? I’ll give you the answer so you don’t have to read this whole dang thing: This blog, and all of my posts, books, content, are written by me. Here’s a video where someone asked me privately if it was AI, while another commented publicly, “Bro, aren’t you a comedian?” You can read my response on the video.     Is that video AI or is it me? It’s crazy we have people wondering that now. All the more reason to have LIVE EVENTS with each other. Truth is – I have a very unique writing style. In fact, I hired a very accomplished editor to go through my book before submitting it to the publisher. She returned with the following: “Jason, I don’t know

Our Promise to The Teachers in Our Lives

School is back in session. In every event I speak or perform at, whether it’s leadership training, keynoting, or doing a show, I NEVER take the stage without honoring the teacher who made such an impact in my life: Mrs. Rosalind Hall, the music teacher. If you’ve heard me speak, then you know her voice and the story. If you haven’t, the long and short of it is that she discovered my singing voice and became my mentor. I never have a career in this business of music without her influence. The Promise to our teachers while in school is to be respectful, learn what we can, give great effort, and do our best. What about the Promise after we graduate and move onto the future? I believe The Promise is to Honor The Teachers in Our Lives. Tell their stories, sing their praises, as they are the ones who shape so many of us. Who is yours? If not one, well then, perhaps there were many!   The Piano Guys I’ve written a BLOG about this before (3 years ago), and you can read in detail HERE if you prefer. I was doing an event with The Piano

Father of the Bride

Perhaps the most intimidating and important speech you’ll ever give is the Father of the Bride speech. At least that’s how it feels to the first timer, who is sweating through his corduroy trousers, not quite sure how to gather so many essential thoughts in front of all the most important people of his life. A few years ago I made a video that assists men in creating their speech. Luckily, I have never given that intimidating speech, as my daughter is not getting married anytime soon, but putting myself in the place of a soon to be father of the bride, I came up with some teachings that seemed to resonate. The GIRL acronym just appeared in my mind, and it seemed almost elementary, as I wondered if I should put it in the video… Turns out, that is the most essential part of this one, and memorable to all who have utilized it. Want to know what GIRL stands for in this instance? Watch the video to find out! (Actually, I am keenly aware of the amount of people who are willing to read my words but not interested in watching the videos, LOL, so here’s the

The Promise of The Father

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, father figures, and men who make a difference in a young person’s life. We as a family are currently in the throes of major phases of youth becoming adults: Redford is serving a 2-year full-time mission in Santa Fe, Argentina, 10 months in Romney is leaving for his mission to Antigua, Guatemala in August Ella is leaving on her mission to Limatambo, Peru in October Royal is 14 and wondering what happened to his family as he knows it   This has been a most spectacular time of our lives, and nothing could have prepared us for the opportunity to have 3 kids all serving our Heavenly Father at the same time, while all learning Spanish and living in other countries. We won’t be in the same place as a whole family one time between August 21, 2025 and September 2, 2028. That is sobering to think about, and yet, we wouldn’t want them to be anywhere else or doing anything different. We are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and yes, we live in Utah. With the name of Jesus Christ on their name tags, it is

The Power of Writing Notes: The Promise of Showing Appreciation

Our son, Romney, graduated from high school on Wednesday. He is our third child to do so in the last three years, so we are getting the hang of this time of life and transitionary period, as equally sobering and joyful as it is. We are very excited for all he has planned, as the world awaits our amazing boy. A few weeks before his big day, I walked in the kitchen and found him sitting at the table in deep contemplation, actively accomplishing something I’d never seen him do: writing with a pen, surrounded by stacks of notes and envelopes, along with great intention. He didn’t notice me, so I took his photo and left him to do his work. A few hours later after he was done, and I asked what he had accomplished. He said he was writing letters of appreciation to his friends. He described how it was important to him to write a note to everyone he had served with in student government as the SBO Spirit Leader of the school his senior year. He mentioned his older brother, Redford, had done the same a year prior, as had their older sister, Ella, before

How FFA Kids Helped Me Refocus My Presentation

It had been years since I agreed to talk with a group of youth. Why? Because something shifted in those audiences a few years back for me, and I haven’t dared return. So, there I was, standing back stage as the arena filled in with over 11,000 FFA youth from across Ohio. I never feel nervous before an event. I feel excited, anxious, and generally confident in what I’m about to do. Of course, there are those feelings inside of imposter syndrome or being tired from a bad night’s sleep in a hotel, but this day was different. I felt sick to my stomach. There is always a moment before stepping on stage that most people don’t think about unless you’re the one waiting to be introduced. The room is set. The audience is waiting. The expectation is there. And in that moment, it’s easy for the focus to turn inward. You begin to have a conversation with yourself: How will this go? Will this connect? Will this be received the way I hope? Those are natural questions. But over time, I’ve found they aren’t the most helpful ones. Because they center everything on you, the performer/speaker/presenter. And the more

The Mother’s Day Promise

Happy Mother’s Day to the special women reading this and the ones we celebrate at this wonderful time of year. I tend to also prefer to include the most important girls, young ladies, and all women in my life on this day, as some may not have reached the age to be a Mother yet, or have found a different path in fulfilling their life’s purpose, and I am hopeful all feel welcomed and loved on this day. My Mother, Marsha, had a birthday a few months ago. She is in terrific health, it is astounding to watch her play with the grandkids and being so mobile, as if she’s never slowed at all even in her 70th decade of life. A few weeks ago I felt it important to celebrate my Mom’s birthday, and the upcoming Mother’s Day, with a special trip including my wife, Tami, my daughter Ella, and my sister, Haylee. Ella left for Juneau, Alaska for the summer on May 1, so we had only a limited amount of time to be together in April. I had seen that a classic movie is playing at The Sphere in Las Vegas, one that has been a

The Missing Link in Leadership: A Promise People Can Trust

Most leaders don’t struggle with knowledge, motivation, or expectations. They struggle with consistency. They’ve read the books. Attended the conferences. Taken the notes. Perhaps you’ve spent time reading “Atomic Habits”, “Think & Grow Rich”, and “The Greatest Salesman in the World”. All excellent works and classics of self-help and higher thought for leadership. And yet—despite reading the books, attending inspiring conferences, even hiring coaches to elevate performance as leaders…. Teams still feel disconnected.Customers still feel uncertain.Cultures still drift. Why? Because leadership isn’t built on what you know. It’s built on what people can count on. You’ve heard me say it, “Why set a Goal when you can Make a Promise?” Do you know how many people resonate immediately with that statement? The Promise is a choice, a clarion call of character, an investment in integrity. The most effective leaders don’t just set goals. They make a Leadership Promise. A goal says: “Here’s what I hope to achieve.” A Promise says: “Here’s what you can expect from me—every time.” A goal says: “Once we reach this marker, we will have arrived.” A Promise says: “This is what I stand for, what I believe, who I am, and nothing will get in the way of
