Did AI Write This Post or Did I?

  Let me guess. You can easily determine between what is written by AI and what’s not. You take great pride in this ability. You catch it in your feed before the hundreds who commented using bots as their autoresponder. So the question is this: Did AI write this post or did I? I assume you’ll be able to easily know by the end, if you read that far. Or perhaps you’ve already figured it out? I’ll give you the answer so you don’t have to read this whole dang thing: This blog, and all of my posts, books, content, are written by me. Here’s a video where someone asked me privately if it was AI, while another commented publicly, “Bro, aren’t you a comedian?” You can read my response on the video.     Is that video AI or is it me? I Finally Made it to College

  If you’ve heard me speak you know my story about having a full-ride scholarship for basketball to a major university (BYU) when I was in high school and feeling good about my future in the NBA. Suddenly, I was discovered by Mrs. Hall, the choir teacher, who pointed me in the right direction for life, as I left my basketball career on the bench, and became a singing entertainer who speaks and writes books. Going to Las Vegas instead of college was a real big swing of a dream, and thankfully worked out. But I always wondered what it would have been like to get into college. I have spoken at many colleges, to thousands of students, leaders, university presidents, faculty, staff, award-winning teachers, and higher education establishments nationwide, but was never actually in college. Launch: The Jason Hewlett Show podcast and livestream broadcast

The other day I was scrolling. Ok, I admit: doomscrolling. I got sucked into that vortex of news: negative stories of tragedy, confrontation, arguments, debates, which devolved into anger, sadness and hate rapidly. Realizing I was going on this path, I took a moment to check my algorithm and was amazed at how easily we can be caught up in going down this slippery slope. To cleanse myself of the feeling of ick all over my mind and spirit, I went to happier places: looked up a Mr. Rogers video, Bob Ross painting some clouds, found some spiritually uplifting speeches, gave room for hymnals that inspired, searched for feel good videos and stories that I could share with my children: A boy with mental disabilities suddenly celebrated for hitting 3 pointers in a basketball game; An artist painting with 10 hanging buckets, spinning colors of the rainbow in circles to a giant canvas; A cat massaging and doing chiropractic work on its golden retriever brother…   Then the baby goats showed up, dancing and prancing on benches, backed by Julie Andrews singing “The Sound of Music” and all was right with my world and algorithms. When The Promise Changes

  This blog has been written, without a miss, for a decade, delivered every Sunday without fail. Truthfully, I am stunned I’ve done anything this long, and it’s now time for a new promise. Last week, between BLACK FRIDAY CYBER MONDAY GIVING TUESDAY WHATEVER WEDNESDAY …I received more emails of annoyance from companies, peers, and causes than I could keep up with. I was hitting the UNSUBSCRIBE button so fast, being sent to the outer reaches of “Manage my Profile to End your Subscription” and other daunting tasks placed upon me (“do you want to report this as SPAM?”) to release the grip of consumerism, that I nearly gave up! But I didn’t – and I rid myself of many needless distractions, sales I don’t want to be sold on, charities I’d never heard of but didn’t have any money left to give to (already supporting many others), and probably hurt the feelings of my friends whose email lists they stuck me on because we once emailed each other…and they probably check who drops more than I do. The Final Retreat

For years, I had what was known in our home as Mentor Mondays. This was due to so many texts, emails, and phone calls from executives, hopeful speakers, and struggling entertainers to “pick my brain” over lunch. Eventually my brain had been picked, pecked, and prodded over enough soggy salads at lunches around Utah that we shifted things to say: Can you come to me and let’s talk? We funneled everyone to Mondays, into 2 hour time slots and a revolving door of mentoring that sometimes saw people from 8AM-8PM learning the craft of running a business, following their dreams, and keeping The Promise to their hopes in life. It was my best way of giving back, after I had the same experience to begin my career, where Chris Poulos had welcomed me into his home, free of charge, to sit on his couch and learn from the greatest philosopher and spiritual mentor I could have asked for outside of my own wonderful parents growing up.     For years, day and night, I came and went to the Poulos household in Orem, UT, with his lovely spouse Gail in the background doing genealogy work at the living room table,

The Best Fathers Day Presents

  Christmas Day was nearly 6 months ago (this next week), and it has been that long since I have enjoyed the gifts that keep on giving in our home. That cold wintry morning, as presents were strewn about the house, wrapping paper piled high, the kids were thrilled with what we had given them, but they had something else on their minds. Finally, when they were done opening theirs, they sat Mommy & I down to reveal a gigantic box, wrapped special, as we wondered what they had purchased for us. Our kids are now teens, and they have incredible imaginations and personalities, so we were curious, due to the grins on the faces of all, if they had a friend wrapped up in there to do a Jack-in-The-Box scare tactic, perhaps had re-gifted some white elephant presents, or had bought us a family of geckos. Instead, the box revealed many presents, all hand wrapped as well, in a nesting fashion, meticulously placed just right. Who’s The Sellout Now?

  20 years ago at this time I was being offered the opportunity of a lifetime in Las Vegas: to be managed, produced, and mentored by the people who brought my hero, Danny Gans, to Sin City and helped make him a star. Then I would have a residency at multiple locations throughout California and Nevada before perfecting my new show and headlining The Strip as the new star in town. They said I was the next Danny Gans, I was 25 years old. Due to what my show would have needed to morph into in order to keep the Vegas promise of a new brand they had just adopted, a slogan of “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” I decided to do what seemed insane at the time by walking away from the biggest fast track any person could dream for, and even still to this day, makes me wonder what could have been…although I know I made the right choice for my life. 2 decades later I have a happy family life, my eldest daughter graduates from high school this very week, we have put roots down in my home state, are grateful for our community life,

Eighth Grader Drives the School Bus

  As the school year winds down here is a powerful story of leadership from the fast action of an eighth grader! His name is Acie Holland III. Riding the bus home from school, Acie noticed the driver missed a turn and was now accelerating, while slumped over and unconscious! I don’t know about you, but most adults in this situation would: Scream Panic Take out their phone and film what is happening, livestreaming on the Insta, while commentating and tagging the Kardashians! Acie jumped up, ran to the front, moved the driver’s foot off the gas, and got control of the bus headed into oncoming traffic, steadily slowing down to a stop on the side of the road. An EIGHTH Grader! Once stopped, as reported here, he called 911 and his Grandmother, who is a nurse assistant (always call Grandma first!). He then instructed the other 13-15 kids to call their families and remain calm. Leadership. Action. A Doer. Rudy’s Promise: Mommy & Baby vs. Basketball

  This past week one of my favorite players, a former Utah Jazz man and now 4-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, made a decision that confronts the very topic of this blog with precision: to what level do you keep The Promise? His partner, the inspiring and lovely Julia Bonilla, was set to have a baby, their first, and Rudy did not want to miss the moment. Problem was: His team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, were set to play Game 2 of the Playoffs against the defending champion Denver Nuggets, and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go up 2-0 against the champs. Per usual with professional sports, most athletes miss big and important family events all the time, including births of their children.
