The COVID Test

  As I waited for the required 15 minute COVID test to give its results allowing me to join the event I had flown across country to participate in, the sweat began to bead on my forehead. This event was booked 7 months prior. Due to all of the cancelled flights over the holidays, knowing I was flying from Utah to Florida, I let the client know I needed to fly in 2 days prior to ensure I could either rebook a cancelled flight OR Hop in my car and drive 2,350 miles as fast as possible to make it in time to the event. Due to the fact that I might have COVID, and would need to take a test to prove I was negative, my suitcase was full of my VIRTUAL SETUP (Lights, Camera, Microphone and more) to do my presentation from the hotel room just in case. Due to the event having so many people cancelling nationwide with the virus hitting their families, this first attempt to get together in 2 years as a team and work family compromised nearly all of their plans, the meeting planners had to insist every attendee take a COVID test and

When You’re In The Breadline

In the Depression-era film “Cinderella Man”, we see James Braddock, a once almost champion boxer in the grips of economic failure, his inability to provide for his family through boxing’s trade, humbly brave the infamous breadline while being recognized as the failed boxer. This movie is not for the faint of heart, especially if – you’ve suffered an injury (his was a broken right hand) that he had to continue using to fight, re-breaking over and over again, just to survive; if you’ve come on hard times financially in the past and had to downgrade aspects of your family lifestyle and felt you have let them down; if you’ve ever wondered where the next opportunity will come from.  In other words: I HIGHLY recommend this movie for most people at this point of 2021, especially if any or all of the above is true!   As it will bring you HOPE!  The Promise to consistently stay motivated and inspired by the Legendary Leaders of yesterday is one thing we have complete control over, no matter how difficult life becomes.  We can always fill our time with powerful, hopeful stories, such as James Braddock getting one more shot when all was lost,

Everything that’s wrong in your life is because you broke a Promise to yourself! You may not like that statement, but having now dug deep enough into this language and concept, it stands up with some heavy testing. And don’t think I’m just pointing one finger at you, because three are pointing back at me, and I can prove my point. What’s wrong in your life?   Overweight?  You broke a promise to yourself. The Importance of Audience Feedback

For the past 15 months I have not been able to rely on audience feedback to confirm if I did a job well or not from my Virtual Zoom Home Studio. For the first 3 months of the pandemic, every event planner wanted no Chat feature open, nor the cameras on attendees, so I had the pleasure of performing comedy, singing and entertaining, along with teaching The Promise, to the wall. No laughs.  No applause.  No response. Some clients even wanted a pre-recorded video which allowed me the opportunity to not only record 74 takes over a 12 hour day, in order to reach perfection, but then to receive an email a day later asking me to add an extra 10 minutes because it was so good, and that they needed it inserted in the middle of my video and to not appear recorded later… The lengths to which I have gone to merely survive are beyond what I ever thought would be required of me, and yet, I am not alone: All of us have had to Keep The Promise in our own way.  And yet, even once the Chat feature opened, pre-records essentially done away with, engagement the

The Promise to Push Yourself

We are nearing the halfway point of 2021. It is highly likely a few of those New Years resolutions are either accomplished and filed away as a part of your History of Awesome, or they are long forgotten and will be reset next January. It doesn’t matter the time of year, or the phase of life, I wonder where you’re at in terms of pushing yourself. For me one year ago this week I was PUSHING everything to the limit – my virtual office capabilities to deliver content in an entertaining way on a ZOOM call, my body to stay up long enough to do the work required, my credit card to see how long we could last while the money slowly began to trickle in again. The effects of such a push means other things are neglected: My Family knew I was pressed, and time together was scheduled and not as frequent, my weight went up as I stopped walking and working out as usual, my reading of books temporarily stopped as I focused all efforts on learning my craft through YouTube. California doctor has court hearing for traffic violation; Logs into Zoom to appear for meeting with Judge; Appears to be wearing operating room gear; Appears to be in operating room; Appears to be operating and performing surgery! The court clerk asks, “Are you available for trial?  It kind of looks like you’re in an operating room right now?” Doctor: “I’m in an operating room.  Yes, I’m available for trial.  Go right ahead!” Medical equipment, beeping in background, doc handling surgical tools… On a court appearance Zoom call!!! Response from the wise Judge: “So unless I’m mistaken, I’m seeing a defendant that’s in the middle of an operating room appearing to be actively engaged in providing services to a patient,” Judge Gary Link said during the virtual hearing. “I do not feel comfortable for the welfare of a patient if you’re in the process of operating that I would put on a trial.” Ok, Time-Out. The Blessing of Work

  2 weeks ago I sat with my family and told them this would be a different kind of December. Daddy is usually gone most of this month, running around entertaining at holiday parties and missing every kids concert, ball game, family party and decorating the Christmas tree. This year would be different, I told them, even though this year there will be no kids concerts, Zoom-only attended ball games, and COVID-cancelled family parties… And this year, instead of driving across the street to the tree farm, we would take an entire day, drive to the mountains, chop down a real Christmas tree, and decorate it together!  I never thought that would be an unforgettable and wonderful experience, but it was, even when the tree tried to jump off our car on the highway. As of 2 weeks ago I had only 3 events scheduled over the entire month (I used to average over 20 events the first 3 weeks), including my Virtual Public Show December 28th to close out the year, in a last ditch effort to bring smiles to anyone interested in receiving joy while my family and I create a fun SHOW experience from our home –

The Gift

April 6, 2020 It had been over a month since I’d been on a stage, as I sat in my office staring at a blank white board that had been filled with events scheduled for an epic 2020 just weeks prior, now canceled or postponed. To me, all was lost. No prospects, no opportunities, no interest in what I had to offer in a virtual setting. How would I provide for my family? Suddenly a ping on my phone. A TEXT from a friend of a friend – yes we’d met before, but only in passing. “Can you bring some joy to our employees in a 30 minute virtual performance?  We just laid off 40 employees and are reeling during this situation.  I can’t really offer you any money but happy to provide something of trade if you tell me what you need.” The feeling of worthlessness began to subside. The Importance of Connection Right Now

  I was so excited as I hung up the phone. Having just received word my client was moving forward and doing a December holiday party, where I would share The Promise message to inspire attendees, while entertaining them with laughs and music going into the New Year, I was on cloud 9. My wife and I were already counting the money – we would finally be able to justify providing something of substance for our family this Christmas. Gratitude is a word that can’t be quantified when things are tight and every little blessing arrives.  #GiveThanks Devastation is also a word that shows up quite a bit as well. That was the feeling the next morning when the email landed in my inbox saying the event agreed upon yesterday was going in a different direction, no need for my appearance this year, hope we can have you in the future… Ouch. How often can this happen in one year? Be it in-person events canceled and then virtual meetings shifted… This is rough.
