Our Promise to The Teachers in Our Lives

  School is back in session. In every event I speak or perform at, whether it’s leadership training, keynoting, or doing a show, I NEVER take the stage without honoring the teacher who made such an impact in my life: Mrs. Rosalind Hall, the music teacher. If you’ve heard me speak, then you know her voice and the story. If you haven’t, the long and short of it is that she discovered my singing voice and became my mentor. I never have a career in this business of music without her influence. The Promise to our teachers while in school is to be respectful, learn what we can, give great effort, and do our best. What about the Promise after we graduate and move onto the future? I believe The Promise is to Honor The Teachers in Our Lives. Tell their stories, sing their praises, as they are the ones who shape so many of us. Who is yours? Rocket Man Meets Piano Man: Corporate Entertainment That Gets the Room Singing with Elton & Billy

Today I received an email from a client and friend who has had me speak, perform, emcee, and help with their events in the past. They are one of my favorite groups of all-time. How pleased I was to get the email subject line written above. That may be one of my favorite email subject lines I’ve ever read. The Broken Team

  Doug sent a frantic text, Jenny replied in Slack, marketing in turn launched a premature email campaign, and customer service was immediately inundated with angry clients. Leadership meets, confusion all around, too many cooks in the kitchen, while ten people are working on the same task without being assigned to work together on any given project. The wheels are falling off the bus, or rather, they did a long time ago. In business culture, it is easy to observe where things aren’t working. Just set up a call with any employee and let them tell you the truth, once you’ve established what they say won’t be held against them. Just look at the confusion coming into customer service due to the latest mistake sent out. Just take a gander at Slack and see how well that’s being utilized. Father of the Bride

  Perhaps the most intimidating and important speech you’ll ever give is the Father of the Bride speech. At least that’s how it feels to the first timer, who is sweating through his corduroy trousers, not quite sure how to gather so many essential thoughts in front of all the most important people of his life. A few years ago I made a video that assists men in creating their speech. Luckily, I have never given that intimidating speech, as my daughter is not getting married anytime soon, but putting myself in the place of a soon to be father of the bride, I came up with some teachings that seemed to resonate. The GIRL acronym just appeared in my mind, and it seemed almost elementary, as I wondered if I should put it in the video… Turns out, that is the most essential part of this one, and memorable to all who have utilized it. The Pilot and The Delay: What To Do When You’ve Broken The Promise

  If I were to ask you who is the most reliable person you work with, what face and name comes to mind? We all have that person. Hopefully! If you’re lucky, they make up your team, your “work family” as I prefer to call it, and continually fill you with gratitude as one of the most underrated, and essential secret traits of success: consistency and reliability! The Wisdom Teeth Promise

My son had his wisdom teeth removed. As he came out of sedation, he had previously asked my wife to ensure the result was captured on video, as he hoped it would be funny to watch later. My goodness, was it ever. In fact, she turned the camera on him as he went LIVE online to the delight of the now viral amount of people who found this hilarious. Context: Romney is very funny, yet extremely reserved, and talented at many things, but few people know that he is an incredible singer, as he won’t sing in public – ever. He’s too embarrassed. UNLESS he’s coming out of surgery! Well, here’s the big reveal! LOL! A mix of Seal’s “Kissed By A Rose” and Frankie Valli’s “Sherry” have him singing through gauze pads from the back of the minivan at full voice. Enjoy. The Secret to Motivating Teams

The secret to motivating your team? Sit down with them and go through the ICM Process. This is the opposite of the “let’s discuss what you can do better” conversation. It is a recognition of every employee’s talents, gifts, strengths, and empowering them to use these as often as possible. As I have taught this simple, yet profound, process to leaders for many years, it is not only transformative for the employee, but the leader gets quite a bit of insight as well. The Silent Encourager Promise

  I just came off stage following a very mediocre response to my performance…which is not something I’m used to. Today I tried a few pieces and customized portions the client requested that changed up my usual rhythm, but those are just excuses. Perhaps I just wasn’t good enough this time. Perhaps it was a room full of accountants silently laughing hysterically to themselves inside their bodies. Perhaps this was my toughest crowd of the year. As I sit backstage awaiting the next portion of the event where I get to muster the courage to go face those same people again, the stage manager asks if someone can come backstage to say hi. The next thing I know, my new friend and I are hanging out in the green room, as he refills my bucket, saying he was not going to attend this event until he heard I was the Speaker and Entertainer.
