  My phone rang and I picked up, despite the number not being in my phone. “Hello?” I said “Jason Hewlett, this is the new high school basketball Coach at your son’s school, do you have a minute?” “Yes sir, is everything ok?” I asked. “All is well. I heard you’re the only person who can do something for us that is a pretty challenging ask, to be frank, but I believe you’ll be up to the task,” he said. I figured he was going to ask me to come and speak to the players to pump them up before the game. I was wrong. I don’t think he actually knows what I do for a living. LOL Instead, he had been told about what I pulled off to save my career during 2020 when we all switched our lives to VIRTUAL events and broadcasting presentations to the world from our homes. The new head Coach laid out to me his vision of what he wanted the school to have for every boys Varsity basketball game this year: A LIVE, multi-camera, streaming broadcast, run by parents and students, that would be professional quality, no less! To Be A Fan – Ode to Ben Folds

(I have something incredibly cool to announce, that I can barely keep a secret anymore, but must wait a little bit longer…so please watch for a SPECIAL email coming your way in the next few days.)  On to the Article! ~ My inbox just pinged me with a notification that one of my favorite artists in the world is coming to my hometown of Park City, UT. I already knew this, but hadn’t purchased tickets because I had a HOLD on the date for a client. It’s rare for me to be happy that a client changed their date, but that’s what happened, and now I just paid a fairly large sum for my wife and children to go see, LIVE and IN CONCERT, an artist I have adored for almost 30 years. Mr. Ben Folds!!! If you don’t know his work, it’s as if Billy Joel and Elton John decided to have a child with Weird Al (in terms of comedy lyrics), and Mr. Rogers (in poignancy and wisdom).  Alt-Rock, Indie-Pop, Percussive Piano…hard to explain, but the dude’s a genius, as we see in this video of him composing a piece with an entire orchestra here:     Yes,

The Cold Shower Dilemma

Scroll through social media and you will likely run into alpha dudes with their shirts off, bulging muscles, jumping out of a barrel of ice water, shouting at you to wake up at 4 AM every day and be manly enough to do the daily cold plunge. Or maybe that’s just in my algorithm. Yours may be filled with cats singing show tunes, or hot air balloon rides at dawn, or cats singing show tunes in hot air balloons at dusk…because who sings show tunes at dawn? My Instagram feed feels like a commercial for testosterone-roided gorillas, daring me, a scared baby monkey with a bald bottom, to chuck the banana, eat raw liver, and be as brave as them. Sorry Liver King! I ain’t no King, and I can’t eat Liver…but truth was finally revealed recently, so there’s that. However, I’ll be very honest here – I drank the Kool-Aid. The COVID Test

  As I waited for the required 15 minute COVID test to give its results allowing me to join the event I had flown across country to participate in, the sweat began to bead on my forehead. This event was booked 7 months prior. Due to all of the cancelled flights over the holidays, knowing I was flying from Utah to Florida, I let the client know I needed to fly in 2 days prior to ensure I could either rebook a cancelled flight OR Hop in my car and drive 2,350 miles as fast as possible to make it in time to the event. Due to the fact that I might have COVID, and would need to take a test to prove I was negative, my suitcase was full of my VIRTUAL SETUP (Lights, Camera, Microphone and more) to do my presentation from the hotel room just in case. Due to the event having so many people cancelling nationwide with the virus hitting their families, this first attempt to get together in 2 years as a team and work family compromised nearly all of their plans, the meeting planners had to insist every attendee take a COVID test and

The Revenant is 2021

Have you seen “The Revenant”?  It’s not for the weak of heart. If 2020 were a movie scene, it would be when mountain man Hugh Glass (played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who won an Oscar for this one) is mauled by a mother grizzly bear and left for dead. That is the scene that gets all the glory for its gory and storied tale.   It is a true story!  Incredible he survived!  And then we follow Hugh being pulled from place to place in his compromised state by his mostly disinterested peers and very concerned son. What is overshadowed by the bear scene is what comes next. If 2021 were a movie scene it would be the part when Glass, laying and dying from what’s just happened from the bear, is mostly paralyzed from his wounds, and watches horrified, helpless, and voiceless, as his nemesis kills his only son before his very eyes…and then buries Glass alive. True story. That’s how 2021 has felt to me. How about you? I know you come to this blog for uplifting stuff, and you should, it’s my promise to you that you will learn, be entertained, and engaged. Worst Service Ever

Sitting in a restaurant the other night I wondered if our food was ever going to come to the table after having waited an unreasonable amount for a server to take our order before remembering to bring water. As a business owner, I know there is an employment challenge right now, and as those in my party complained of the service, all while we sat there parched, we also discussed The Great Resignation. As a business owner and leader, I don’t want any customers to have this experience with me. Even though I have struggled to survive the past 19 months of pandemic life as a public speaker switching to virtual and back to in-person again, we are still serving the client and keeping The Promise the best we possibly can. As a customer waiting on his food, I can also sit and complain about leadership in the place I chose to frequent. Perhaps I won’t come back due to “slower service” even if the food is decent? However, from my perspective, I felt it more important that day, in that moment, instead of becoming The Critic to choose my perspective and reaction to the situation with my Promise to Lead: Compassion. Understanding. Empathy.

What Do NYC, Honda, & The Homecoming Dance Have in Common? The Promise To The Family

  This morning my wife and 2 oldest sons finally hopped a flight to NYC for a trip we have promised all of our children for their 13th birthdays. Seeing Manhattan when you’re from Salt Lake City, Utah is like going to…Manhattan. There’s nothing to compare it to, it’s so astounding.  Maybe Mars? Sadly, Redford turned 13 in the beginning of the pandemic last year, and then Romney turned 13 this year just as we were all down with COVID.  Financially it just hasn’t been a possibility.  But then – The other day we revealed that I have cashed out all of my SkyMiles, Marriott points, and donated my appendix to science (which surprisingly wiggles it’s nose!)… and they are thrilled to be going to NYC! I can’t wait for them to experience it with their travel savvy and fun Mom.  NYC with Tami is like any trip with her, she’s the funnest person you could ever travel with.  I’m so excited for them. ~ Our youngest, the Royal boy, turned 10 on Tuesday.  No more single digit children in the Hewlett household!   So sad.  But wonderful to watch these kids grow up. We surprised him with the greatest gift

Tsunami: A Raw and Rare Example of The Promise To The Team

  For years, my wife and I have enjoyed the incredible sushi of Tsunami, in particular their South Jordan, UT location. This place is ALWAYS packed. Lines out the door oftentimes, and has been that way since it first opened in our community. Tsunami’s Signature Moves: Be the best, high end choice for sushi.  Their Promise is that the sushi is fresh, delicious, and is the top spot to get delicious Japanese food on a date with a loved one or just meeting/impressing the important clients for a business gathering. Tsunami has remained extraordinarily busy through these tough 18 months past, as they consistently provide a Promise Customer Experience (PCX), while equally have a wonderful, friendly, lively staff. I’m on their mailing list, and was shocked to see this email sent as a part of their newsletter last week.   What do you think?     This is incredible to me – that they are closing on Sundays for this reason! When You’re In The Breadline

In the Depression-era film “Cinderella Man”, we see James Braddock, a once almost champion boxer in the grips of economic failure, his inability to provide for his family through boxing’s trade, humbly brave the infamous breadline while being recognized as the failed boxer. This movie is not for the faint of heart, especially if – you’ve suffered an injury (his was a broken right hand) that he had to continue using to fight, re-breaking over and over again, just to survive; if you’ve come on hard times financially in the past and had to downgrade aspects of your family lifestyle and felt you have let them down; if you’ve ever wondered where the next opportunity will come from.  In other words: I HIGHLY recommend this movie for most people at this point of 2021, especially if any or all of the above is true!   As it will bring you HOPE!  The Promise to consistently stay motivated and inspired by the Legendary Leaders of yesterday is one thing we have complete control over, no matter how difficult life becomes.  We can always fill our time with powerful, hopeful stories, such as James Braddock getting one more shot when all was lost,

What is Your Promise2Lead?

  Over the past 2 months I have experienced a true life tragedy within an organization I’ve been a part of for 16 years. A complete loss of trust! An absolute mismanagement of emotions, rumors, deception tearing people of one heart and mind completely apart! Mistakes have been made high and low…and yet, even with attempts to correct pain and problem, those in positions of authority have lost the audience. A BROKEN PROMISE OF LEADERSHIP! It is tragic to watch within this community that were once friends, now separated, skeptical, cynical and perhaps never to return! As a Leader let me ask you: What would you do in this situation? All that is missing is one thing:  The Promise To Lead!  As I pick myself from the wreckage I have begun a reclamation project – going person to person to assess the emotional damage, even though I am not the assigned leader, and am permanently scarred by this experience myself. If I feel such pain I know others are as well.       Does this sound familiar?  We must CHANGE SOMETHING, no matter how painful! Watching what is happening around the world there is so much destruction, hurt, and separation.
