2017 Goals vs. Promises

As the NEW YEAR approaches, what are the GOALS you are focused on accomplishing to really hit a home run this coming year?

If you’re like me, you realize that sometimes GOALS aren’t enough.

Call it what you will: Resolutions * Commitments * Goals

I ask the question: “Why Set a Goal when you can Make a Promise?”

I’m not saying Goals aren’t important – that would be ridiculous!  We all need to set Goals.

But Goals are those pieces we can chop away at.  Usually Goals are associated with numbers, systems, projects. In that case, Goals are good.

Where our words make all the difference is how we see a Goal.

For example, if we don’t hit a goal and it’s not a big deal then that’s how we’ll feel about coming up short.  No biggie.

However, if I said, “I set the Goal that I’ll get that project done by tonight!” you would probably feel more confident I’d have it done by tonight if I said something using a more powerful word, such as, “I PROMISE I will get that to you before the night is over”.

Or how about the more humorous wording, upon committing to wedding vows, of, “I set the goal to do my best to be faithful…” rather than, “I Promise you are my one and only!”

A Promise is a statement, vocalization, it has true, powerful meaning.

A Promise is a Pledge, Manifesto, a Declaration.

Think of it this way:

Goals are Particulars; Promises are Proclamations!

So yes, set lots of Goals, and go for them.

But make few Promises, and keep all of them!

What are your Goals for 2017?

And what are your Promises for 2017?

I’ll start:

I set the Goal to WRITE every day.  I will write upon rising each morning, capture my thought’s as I work-out, carry pen and paper, and keep up with the writings of my colleagues and The Greats of yesteryear.

I Promise to CREATE beauty, humor, & inspiration throughout the entire year!

What are yours?
