The Leader You Could Be

When was the last time you shopped at JCPenney?

Yeah, me neither.

Identity crisis killed their store.

Jumping from CEO to CEO in the past decade, trying anything and everything to get back into the game, CNN’s story regarding their leadership in “How it all went wrong at JCPenney” by Nathaniel Meyersohn states:

“Penny is plagued by a lack of understanding about what it is, what it stands for, and who it wants to serve…”

In other words, they lost their Signature Move in the eyes of their customer and client base, with a self-inflicted wound.  Their audience was confused and bailed.  What was tried and true before the 2008 recession couldn’t be recaptured.

Think if you were called by JCPenney to lead them from disaster.  Could you do it?  What would you do?

When we understand our greatest defining qualities in business, what sets us apart, what our customers expect upon engaging with us, it only drives sales and performance when we leverage our uniqueness.

The Signature Move of JCPenney was lost, and they will close all doors very soon.

That is a lack of leadership at the highest level.

What kind of leader are you?

STEP 3: Magnify = Leverage & Promise to Utilize Your Signature Move

If you have been keeping up with our series of “Creating Legendary Leaders” you have gone through

STEP 1: IDENTIFY

STEP 2: CLARIFY

In STEP 3 we learn to truly embrace what is our differentiating factor, and leverage it to the nth degree.

It captures business, makes it return, and spins into more business – something every leader wants to create!

The Process in STEP 3 is much simpler than the previous two, and is outlined as follows:

  1. PROMISE to own your Signature Move
  2. PROMISE to leverage your Signature Move
  3. PROMISE to teach others to discover and utilize theirs

Examples abound of those who OWN and then LEVERAGE their uniqueness and Signature Moves.

Think of Jimmy Fallon’s enthusiasm as The Tonight Show host; Austin, TX owning their “Keep Austin Weird” tagline; Olive Garden with endless breadsticks….the list goes on and on in every industry, in successful any business, with every legendary leader.

Consider the State you live in, what is it known for, how is that owned, leveraged and marketed to almost a ridiculous point.  Driving through Idaho this week I nearly crashed in laughter as I passed a sign that read, “Potato Museum Next Right”.  That is leverage my friend!  (and I bet when I said “Idaho” you were already thinking POTATO!)

Legendary Performers of the stage have such powerful and unique Signature Moves that some don’t even need music, yet you could tell who it is just by doing one movement with our head, such as this example of Stevie Wonder:

What is Your Signature Move?

It’s not to say you only have one.  You are of course special and unique, but it’s not about just having one Signature Move, because in all likelihood you have many and they are perhaps very similar to what hundreds of others have as well.

The important thing is how you COMBINE THEM ALL and then –

How you OWN and LEVERAGE them!

That is The Promise and the core of this message.

When you share what you’ve got, delivered in a way that is unique, you establish distinction, differentiation, and as my friend and Hall of Fame Speaker, Scott McKain says, “You become ICONIC!”

You may have seen this video before, but watch it again, now that you know THE PROCESS, you have been instructed as to MY PROCESS.  Watch this video with the eyes of someone who has been through The Process of Signature Moves.  Remember, school for me made no sense, I had to discover, refine, and eventually own my uniqueness, and it has made me millions of dollars in business allowing me to influence hundreds of thousands of leaders on stages around the world.  This is leveraging our unique gifts to the maximum and this routine will now be even funnier to you because I own it and YOU know the process – all in one comedy routine that no one on planet earth would dare share, even if they could do it.  That’s The Promise.

You have now gone through the Process of Creating Legendary Leaders:

STEP 1: IDENTIFY

STEP 2: CLARIFY

STEP 3: MAGNIFY

Now it is your responsibility to keep THE PROMISE and teach others the same.  Take these articles to your Team, help them discover, own, and leverage their Signature Moves, and then you become a truly Legendary Leader who will take your team, your clients, your business, and your family, to new and greater heights of success.

or…

You can just bring me in to teach it in the most entertaining, insightful, and thought provoking Leadership presentation you’ve ever seen.  Your choice 🙂

Congratulations!  You are THE PROMISE.

  1. I love the methodology behind magnify and that is something you have done as a coach. I appreciate that you have done that with me.
