The other night our family snuggled in for a chance to watch something fun on NETFLIX.
As we scrolled through the options, our kids had seen a majority of the limited “Family Movies” section, even multiple times, so we went in search of something new and fun to watch together.
After scrolling and previewing our options for nearly 30 minutes we came to the realization that the few good movies we’d already seen, others were too much cartoon based and uninteresting, and all the rest, meaning 99/100 movies, were truly inappropriate for our kids to see.
So we went to normal TV programming.
And were appalled by what we saw there.
As we flipped through the channels we saw 4 people murdered, some explosions, a very racy intimacy scene, language that was too harsh for young ears, and our choices were relegated to watching the “Who Done It” murder crime scene investigation, a Seinfeld episode the kids didn’t understand, or the Spanish Channel with scantily clad women in a fight. 3 minutes of channel surfing.
Disappointed, we decided to turn the TV off to go do something else.
Thus the reason for VidAngel.
You’ve probably heard of them. They, like others before, have tried to help families like mine and yours enjoy the rare times we get to sit down together to view something – anything – appropriate on TV.
How do they do this?
VidAngel allows the viewer to censor or filter anything they prefer, in order to watch a good Hollywood movie still.
Don’t want to see heads cut off? Set your gory level.
Don’t want to hear language your kids will repeat later at church? Set your filth level.
Don’t want to see sex scenes you’ll have to explain to the kids later? Set your filter!
In other words, a movie like “50 Shades of Gray” will now be 12 seconds long, featuring only the closing credits. I’m exaggerating. It’s actually 14 seconds.
Their tag line is: VidAngel – Watch Movies However The BLEEP You Want!
But you can still watch a great Hollywood movie that has a great message and meaning.
It is a fascinating concept and gained many followers while it was up and working.
And then Hollywood came balking, The Big 5 Studios shutting them down in favor of Bill of Rights stuff and how no one should be able to “edit” their work.
What makes VidAngel different is there is no permanent editing here. It is essentially the equivalent of seeing a Broadway cursing-heavy laden show transformed for the community theater and families to enjoy together in your hometown. Hale Centre Theatre is world-famous for it, and the integrity of every production is never compromised, it is in fact enhanced and sells out every night!
And yet VidAngel was taken to task, and after raising $10 Million dollars in 48 hours with a GoFundMe campaign to fight the biggest Hollywood studios, still had all content pulled.
It is a shame. My family can’t even sit and watch TV together, and the movies available are inappropriate for little kids’ eyes and ears to hear.
Now stuck with millions of subscribers longing for their service, VidAngel has asked everyone to be patient while it creates as much content as possible.
Family appropriate content.
Their first task: Create COMEDY the whole family can enjoy. Since that isn’t available anywhere ever.
VidAngel purchased a building in downtown Provo, UT, renovated it, and turned it into a Comedy Club called DryBar Comedy where filming could take place.
They turned to the best working comedians in America, any that were clean, and brought them in for a 5-camera HD shoot, filming 2 Comedians nightly, and cranking out what will be 100 Specials for their subscribers to enjoy.
They did this in 3 months.
That’s where I come in.
We filmed my now retired “Father Time” show about my getting older as well as being a Dad. Here’s a sampling of the video I used to sell whereas the new filming will be available soon!
Met with rousing standing ovations and requests to come film more, I realized what kind of a true pickle these incredible business, family men, running VidAngel are in.
I will be filming more content with them and announcing it coming up soon.
What strikes me is The Promise kept by VidAngel to keep going, to keep with a mission that is doomed to fail in fighting Hollywood, to still deliver to an awaiting, hungry, passionate audience for their product and concept.
Hollywood may not bend. But VidAngel, and it’s customers, feel that’s a fight they’re willing to get bloody over (although blood will be filtered out).
In the interim they’re creating content as fast as possible to keep their Promise to their Audience.
Whether you agree with the concept of VidAngel or not, the David & Goliath story can be appreciated and admired by anyone.
And I hope you’ll join me as I support the little guy who is making a big huge difference.

You are So right. We enjoyed vidangel and are truely disappointed with Hollywood
Jason thanks for your comments
Yes sir! Hello my dear friend, I know you support what I’ve written – Johnny B’s!

Wow Darren, honored to hear from you! I admire greatly your amazing life and career, thank you for this message today.
Dude, great article and thanks for sharing. Let’s be an angel ? and help the angels out. If we want a better world we need better content and options. I feel the same way when I go into a video arcade with the kids. All violence and blowing stuff up. Rock on
Wonderful my brother. You are an angel my friend.
Yes, indeed, Raptor Man!
It’s my (bleep)ing big screen, my (bleep)ing living room, my (bleep – meaning wonderful) family, our (bleep)ing ears (and eyes). Why the (bleep) can’t we (bleep) the (bleep) out of whatever the (bleep) we want to (bleep) —- in our own (bleep)ing home?
You think maybe the (bleep)ing courts (not just Hollywood) have gone too (bleep)ing far?
Eh? (bleep)!
Love (we don’t bleep “love”),
Raptor Man #2 (a shadow of thine larger self)
Nice!
PS ~ Jason ~
Inspired by your article, I just watched every comedy routine on Dry Bar Comedy dot Com. These routines are outstanding!
To create laugh-out-loud humor without crude expletives is a much higher (and more difficult) art form — and a whole lot funnier — than (bleep), (bleep) and (bleep).
This is a movement worth joining. What can we do to help?
Thank you my friend. Best thing we can do to help I believe is to simply support VidAngel, as well as any performance that uplifts and inspires.
Great post, Jason. I’ve struggled to find good content and became accepting of the bad. Enough of that. I now don’t watch any shows. But I’ll definitely go to VidAngel and enjoy it’s content.
I’ve fallen into that as well. It’s tough not to justify it as just entertainment but then it wears on our soul. Good for you. We’re in this together. Thanks for your leadership.
