Yes, there’s power in making funny faces, and it has been the door opener for most of my success in business, on stage, eventually convincing my wife to marry me and making my children laugh. What are the secrets to making a funny face?   1st: Willingness to Look Stupid Being willing to look stupid takes supreme confidence, sharing the weirdness that is you can be scary. How FFA Kids Helped Me Refocus My Presentation

It had been years since I agreed to talk with a group of youth. Why? Because something shifted in those audiences a few years back for me, and I haven’t dared return. So, there I was, standing back stage as the arena filled in with over 11,000 FFA youth from across Ohio. I never feel nervous before an event. I feel excited, anxious, and generally confident in what I’m about to do. Of course, there are those feelings inside of imposter syndrome or being tired from a bad night’s sleep in a hotel, but this day was different. I felt sick to my stomach. There is always a moment before stepping on stage that most people don’t think about unless you’re the one waiting to be introduced. The room is set. The audience is waiting. The expectation is there. And in that moment, it’s easy for the focus to turn inward. You begin to have a conversation with yourself: How will this go? Will this connect? The Ultimate Ski Crash and My Latest Concussion

I Was Having the Best Ski Runs of My Life… Until I Wasn’t I’ve skied my whole life. I grew up in Park City, Utah. Yes, I spent as many days on the mountain as I could through my entire youth. And when I get the chance now, I’m still out there (usually at Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon, SLC, UT) doing what I’ve always loved to do.     I’ll just say it plainly: I’m a very good skier. I like to go fast. I like to push it. I like to feel my legs burn by the end of a run because I’ve gone all in. Is this surprising? The Wisdom Teeth Promise

My son had his wisdom teeth removed. As he came out of sedation, he had previously asked my wife to ensure the result was captured on video, as he hoped it would be funny to watch later. My goodness, was it ever. In fact, she turned the camera on him as he went LIVE online to the delight of the now viral amount of people who found this hilarious. Context: Romney is very funny, yet extremely reserved, and talented at many things, but few people know that he is an incredible singer, as he won’t sing in public – ever. He’s too embarrassed. UNLESS he’s coming out of surgery! Well, here’s the big reveal! LOL! A mix of Seal’s “Kissed By A Rose” and Frankie Valli’s “Sherry” have him singing through gauze pads from the back of the minivan at full voice. Enjoy. Don’t Read The Comments

If you want to feel bad about yourself, go ahead and read the comments. Truly, some of the worst days of my life have come when I accidentally stumbled upon the very public thoughts of keyboard warriors insulting me from the safety of their parent’s basement covered in Cheetos and self-righteous indignation. Want to see what I mean? Scroll through the comments on this video of my routine that gets a standing ovation at pretty much every event performance I’ve ever shared it with. LOL! “I’m not laughing.”  “Boring.”  “Move on…nothing funny here, folks.” (7 likes) “I’ve either lost my sense of Humor, or the drink minimum at that club is way too high.” (17 likes)       The comments are not always terrible. Somehow, the video with the most views (below), near half a million across multiple platforms, and the longest version of my act available online, has great comments unless you really dig to find the bad ones. My Stolen Raptor

  “Hi son, what’s going on?” I asked, as my 18-year old doesn’t usually call me. “Um, Dad, the Raptor is gone!” he said. Ladies & Gentlemen, yes you may question my judgment, but for the last 2 years I have allowed my oldest boys to drive my F-150 Red Raptor 2022 truck, perhaps the world’s greatest vehicle, owned by my business, as a gift to them for their senior year of high school if they are on the honor roll and making good decisions. Tonight someone made a bad decision. As calmly as possible, I responded, “Where did you last see it and where are you now?” “We went to the Utah Jazz game downtown and I parked it at a restaurant,” my boy said. “Son, did you buy a meal at that restaurant or pay for parking somewhere?” I asked, knowing what he was likely going to say. “Well, we got to the arena late, and couldn’t find a place to park, so we just parked there. The First $100 Gig – The Chipmunk Song by Alvin & The Chipmunks

  “The Chipmunk Song”, by Alvin & The Chipmunks, is a Christmas classic. For 3 decades now I have sung this song in every performance, regardless of the time of year, I just love it that much. In fact, 25 years ago, I was slated to do a 15 minute set at my first corporate holiday party, but due to the way the night went, the client told me to just sing this song and they would still pay me $100. I thought, “Wow, $100 for one song? That’s like $100 a minute! I should make a living doing this!” Walking to the stage, bright lights and client hoping for the song to land, I sang it without any tracks, AKA “a cappella”, and the crowd went bonkers, giving me a standing ovation. It was solidified corporate holiday party gold. Accountants Are a Tough Crowd

For 25 years I have done corporate events. I began all those years ago as the 9 PM performer. That is a hard spot to be in only because, if you have no name in that space, then you are competing with casinos and other show offerings outside of the ballroom door in Vegas, or something better they may want to go do with peers for the rest of the evening. My job was to always keep them in their seats long enough to realize I was a better choice than what was tempting them to leave. So I had to grab them fast, and keep their interest for an hour. And through the years, I noticed that I would get raucous laughs from every group, except for the ones that hired me the most: Accountants, IT Guys, and Engineers. They would just sit there, blankly watching me, and I felt like they didn’t like my show. Yet at the end, they would give me a rousing standing ovation. Every single time. Yearbook Photos Promise

  Do you remember yearbook photo day? I sure don’t. This past week I have tried with all my might to recall those times, with little success, as all that lives on are the final product, which for me was never the photo I’d hoped it would turn out to be, and so I’ve hidden those books and photos away. Rather than dig my yearbooks out of bins in the attic and prove to you that I look far better today as a silver fox than I did back then as a mix between Bert, Ernie, and Opie from The Andy Griffith Show, I instead share with you the funniest yearbook photos idea I’ve ever seen, compliments of my own sons. My boys have decided to make as many moments fun and memorable as possible, this is their Promise to themselves, and it equally enriches our lives as parents and family. Breaking Bad on Labor Day

For those who read this blog, you may be surprised to see me referring to “Breaking Bad”, a TV show known for an extremely heavy, and illegal, array of topics…(of which, if I write the actual words here, this blog will be flagged and banned in certain areas of the world). But you also know I like to draw from many examples to teach The Promise, so here goes one that’s quite a stretch, but had a profound effect on me! It is Labor Day Weekend here in the United States, which was created to celebrate our efforts to work hard through the year, take a break and reflect on the opportunities of our employment, and have a literal hard stop. I confess that I work on every holiday. I enjoy my work, find great pleasure in working hard, and can, with both a tinge of guilt and equally some pride, admit that I have checked emails, texts, and taken calls on every holiday during my career.
