Have you ever had a leader that you wished would let their hair down once in a while?
You knew it was in them, but they just took themselves so serious?
Not to say you want to see recklessness, but you also want to see they are human.
Of late certain leaders have gotten themselves into serious trouble, whether Tweeting in the middle of the night, going on podcasts and radio shows and saying ridiculous things (and then having to step down from their executive position), or having past transgressions come to light.
The level of engagement a leader commits to needs to be strategic, yet also keep a promise to the company to uphold a certain level of leadership that keeps us following along.
When we are in a position of power, responsibility, and represent a company, we as leaders often feel the need to be perceived as flawless, perfect, unflappable.
However, some of the best moments I’ve experienced in my life came when I realized the leaders in my life have the same feelings as normal humans.
I recall the first time I saw my basketball coach with his family, hugging his little ones, a stark contrast from the yelling on the sidelines.
I remember being told the truth, from an entertainment industry icon, regarding how tough it is not only to make it in the business of showbiz, but to also keep your family and faith.
Some of the best moments in the history of my career have come on stages where the CEO and Founders are willing to play along with me as I poke fun at their products…and the crowd goes bonkers!
As a Leader, how do you do the same, allowing those you lead to realize you are human, can empathize with them, and in that vulnerability shed the light which allows us to communicate even greater, while still keeping the promise of balancing playfulness and respect?
Enjoy this video, as it was my 2nd time in nearly a decade performing for SCENTSY, this time with Orville & Heidi Thompson, Co-Owners, President & CEO, joining me on stage to help push a new product they launched last year.
Amazing to see Leaders who become Legendary Leaders in the eyes of their company because they are capable of keeping The Promise of Leadership and even still – willing to play along!
