Goals vs Promises – The Process

Why set a goal when we can make a promise?

If you’ve heard me speak about The Promise, The Engagement Experience, you’ve heard me say that phrase.

A lot of people are confused.

They go, “Does that mean there’s no more goals?”

No.

That’s not what that means, but all you have to do is go through a process that helps you:

Identify

Clarify

Magnify

…what are goals, and what are promises?

If it’s a goal and you can set it and break it and it’s not a big deal if you hit it, that’s a goal, so identify and clarify that.

But if it’s a promise, it’s not as many things. It’s something that’s more of a proclamation, something that you affirm that you will do.

It’s a commitment that you will not break.

What are your promises?

Identify, clarify, and magnify those.

Once you do that, it shifts everything in business, everything in life, the way that you live, and so where goals are still particulars and promises are proclamations, that’s when everything changes.

Why set a goal when we can make a promise

  1. Jason, good job. I have been talking about goals and promises in my business for 15 years. For me a goal s a good idea, a good intention to do something and often we fulfill the goal. Goals have no date or time for completion. On the other hand a PROMISE is my WORD. A promise is a commitment to produce something specific and measurable by a set date and time. A goal is my good intention like we should go to Paris for a vacation. A promise is the contractual agreement with the bank to pay my mortgage every month on the 1st for x number of years.
I argue that there are two ways to deal with promises, one is to keep keep your word fulfilling the promise as stated (produce the result by the date and time stated) and two, to honor your word by renegotiating the promise or revoking the promise. More on that latter when we get to have lunch again. Keep up the good work making a difference.

    1. I like that a lot Julio, thank you for sharing. Yes, there are certainly many ways to work The Promise. Miss you brother!

  2. Excellent you should talk on this. 😉 Actually I’ve been using your methodology ever since you taught it to me. Keep my promise to my audience is one that is always on top of mind.
