The difference between me being gone for 1 Week vs. my wife being gone for 1 Day is astounding.
When I leave for work the ecosystem of our home seems to just know what to do, the kids are capable of continuing to function, life goes on, Mom handles it flawlessly.
When Mommy leaves there is utter chaos, from the inability to find pants, comb hair, locate homework, mend a sickness, comfort a bad dream, figure out why the shower water stopped getting hot, deciding how to get between school to practice to church activity, remembering to give the dog water and cheese, knowing what to do when the dog pooped on the rug because of the cheese, dealing with the contractor who rang the doorbell, filling out the papers for the field trip, having the gift for the teacher ready, snacks and lunches packed, avocado toast with a protein shake in hand, and getting to school on time.
This is all before 7 AM.
By 5 PM every survivor is barely alive in the living room, sedated on the carpet, confused and lost, the house ransacked, an entire family of skeletons who have just crawled from the clutches of wandering the Sahara Desert found comatose next to an empty well… Mommy returns just in time to save the household from utter destruction.
Dramatic though I write, it is absolutely reality around here, in our home, that when Mommy is gone, all heck breaks loose, and yes, even when I’m present (perhaps especially?).
I admit it – I do my best to be a good dad and provider, and think I’m pretty capable of a lot of things, but the superpower that is “mothering” is not in my wheelhouse. Not only do the children need their Mother, but daddy needs Mommy especially.
The Signature Moves that make a wonderful Mom bridge all memories from the foundations of our lives, as she lives her Promise to give her life in service to those she loves and cares for, and solidifies herself as the most important human in our world.
There is no one like Mom.
When she is gone for even one day I begin writing my will…
When she is gone for a few hours, the kids start binge watching Dr. Phil, the DIY channel, ordering DoorDash, and coming up with an escape plan…
There is no one like Mom.
Happy Mothers Day to our MVP, our favorite person, the one who knows all the secrets, fixes all the problems, somehow has all the answers, provides sustenance of heart, mind, body, and soul, unlike any other human can, doing it all with a smile, patience, and wisdom.
There is no one like Mom.
Enjoy a few great quotes found online ~
“Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a Mother.”
“Mom: I love you, and your super long voicemails.”
“A mother understands what a child does not say.”
“Mother: Someone who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one can take.”
“A mother is the one who fills your heart in the first place.”
“Moms are like buttons – they hold everything together.”
Finally, here’s a little song I wrote a few years ago and posted here before, about Mother.
“I Miss Them With You” – written & performed by jason hewlett
I remember days gone by
We would just talk for hours
You’d be awake no matter the hour
How I loved talking with you
And I don’t know if you remember those days
But I miss them with you
And if a boy could have chosen his Mom
I know I’d choose you
Now I’m old and have kids too
When things are tough I think what you’d do
Now when I drive I love to call you
How I love listening to you
And I don’t know if I’m just counting the days
But I miss them with you
And if a boy could have chosen a Mom
I know I’d choose you
Mom I’ll always choose you

Thanks for the mother’s day message. Su-weeet! Read it – watched it – loved it. Love you!
Love you back, my friend! Thank you for the kind and encouraging comment and the message you sent me as well via email.
The Mom vs. Dad dichotomy continues as children become adults and have children of their own. Mom is the voice of comfort, experience, love and hope.
Good news is most often shared first with mom. And bad news. Mom seems to know when to call a child just to check in. Mom bridges the gap between an overwhelmed moment and rediscovered abilities. Mom is the rock keeping Heaven close.
And mom helps dad become the best dad he can be, for the moment and for the eternities.
Les! This is beautiful. Is this another one of your great poems? You have a way with words my friend!
