“Sell It All”: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

When you are the most decorated player in the history of your sport, you would think it would be important to keep every accomplishment, trophy, ring, and accolade by your side to relish the memory until your dying day.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball’s greatest star collectively (no disrespect to Mr. Bill Russell or Michael Jordan) from high school, college, and the NBA, has other ideas, and in my opinion, this is the ultimate Promise of Perspective story.

He just put up for auction nearly everything he owns in order to make a difference for kids.

Mind you, we often hear stories like this of desperate former athletes needing to fix their financial situation.

Not so with Kareem, a savvy businessman and philanthropist, he is giving with a promise to help others now while he has the chance to see the impact.

In the article on ESPN he says,

“When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple: Sell it all.

Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. That’s a history that has no price.”

The items sold for $2,947,872.25

The money is going to his Skyhook Foundation charity that helps kids learn about science, technology, engineering and math.

Question for you: What of your memorabilia, collectibles, and worldly possessions would you be willing to give to lift others to have a brighter future?

That’s the Promise of Perspective.
