Most leaders don’t struggle with knowledge, motivation, or expectations.
They struggle with consistency.
They’ve read the books. Attended the conferences. Taken the notes.
Perhaps you’ve spent time reading “Atomic Habits”, “Think & Grow Rich”, and “The Greatest Salesman in the World”.
All excellent works and classics of self-help and higher thought for leadership.
And yet—despite reading the books, attending inspiring conferences, even hiring coaches to elevate performance as leaders….
Teams still feel disconnected.
Customers still feel uncertain.
Cultures still drift.
Why?
Because leadership isn’t built on what you know.
It’s built on what people can count on.
You’ve heard me say it, “Why set a Goal when you can Make a Promise?”
Do you know how many people resonate immediately with that statement?
The Promise is a choice, a clarion call of character, an investment in integrity.

The most effective leaders don’t just set goals.
They make a Leadership Promise.
A goal says: “Here’s what I hope to achieve.”
A Promise says: “Here’s what you can expect from me—every time.”
A goal says: “Once we reach this marker, we will have arrived.”
A Promise says: “This is what I stand for, what I believe, who I am, and nothing will get in the way of delivering on The Promise.”
That distinction is everything.
When a leader defines a clear Leadership Promise, three powerful things happen:
1. Clarity Replaces Confusion
Your team no longer has to guess who you are on a given day.
They know your standards. Your values. Your approach.
The team knows your Signature Moves, and are grateful you have helped them Identify, Clarify and Magnify theirs.
2. Consistency Builds Trust
Credibility isn’t built in big moments—it’s built in repeated ones.
A promise creates a standard you return to, again and again.
Show up, every single day, with purpose, passion, mission.
3. Culture Becomes Intentional
When leaders model a promise, teams begin to adopt their own.
Now you don’t just have employees—you have ownership.
What Is a Leadership Promise?
It’s simple—but not easy.
Your Leadership Promise is to Identify, Clarify & Magnify the Signature Moves of those you lead!
It is the clearest expression of what people experience when they interact with you.
Not your title.
Not your résumé.
Not your intentions.
Your impact.
It answers the question:
“What do people get—every time—because I’m in the room?”
When you deliver The Promise, every single day, the team will follow, and take ownership.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
In a distracted, fast-moving world, people aren’t looking for perfect leaders.
They’re looking for reliable ones.
Leaders who:
- Show up the same way under pressure
- Communicate with clarity
- Follow through—especially when it’s hard
Recently, I watched a very exciting basketball game where one team was ahead by so much, it was assumed they would win the game.
However, the coach of the team who was trailing by a mile, never let up.
He is the same whether they’re up by 20 or down by 20: fired up, passionate, excited, confident, and screaming like a teeny bopper at an Elvis concert.
This level of intensity isn’t for everyone, in fact, many people despise this coach.
But the players? They will run through a wall for him, because he does the same for them.
What happened in this important game? It was do or die, and if they didn’t win, they would be eliminated from the tournament.
Due to the impassioned display the coach is famous (and infamous) for, the team rallied in an historic fashion, played lights out defense, hit shots that mattered, and came back from behind, stole the ball for the final play, hit a three to win it! It was unlikely, uncanny, and unbelievable.
The coach went from legend to immortal in a matter of seconds, leading his team to their 3rd National Championship game in 4 years.
I’m talking about Dan Hurley, coach of UConn men’s basketball, and their incredible Elite Eight win against #1 ranked Duke University.
Coach Hurley empowers every player on the team to understand their Leadership Promise.
“I grew up on Big East basketball … I grew up on NBA basketball in the 80s and 90s when this is how coaches coached and players played. There was a life or death urgency to how they coached and how they played.” – Dan Hurley
In other words… leaders come in all shapes and sizes, some are intense, some are comfortable sitting back and delegating as everything comes together… and thus, all great leaders keep their promises.
Defining a Leadership Promise is one thing.
Living it—daily, visibly, measurably—is another.
That’s where transformation happens.
When organizations bring this concept to life, they begin to see:
- Stronger alignment across teams
- Increased engagement and accountability
- A culture where people lead themselves—and others
It becomes more than a message.
It becomes a movement inside the company.
When every team member understands they are a leader regardless of position or title, meaning: The Leader of Their Responsibility – this is the magic of The Promise.
Understanding a Leadership Promise intellectually isn’t enough.
People need to feel it, see it modeled, and walk away knowing exactly how to apply it.
As the Speaker teaching how to make and keep The Promise, I utilize all of my gifts, talents, and strengths to entertain, engage and create an experience the audience will likely not soon forget.
When I share stories such as TJ The Shuttle Driver, Mrs. Hall, or other “greatest hits” from my presentation on The Promise, attendees have a real world example and frame of reference as to how their Signature Moves can be applied in their work environment.
That’s the difference between a keynote that’s heard…
and one that’s remembered—and implemented.
Through a unique blend of storytelling, music, humor, and real-world application, audiences don’t just learn this concept—they experience it.
And more importantly…
They leave with a clearly defined Leadership Promise of their own.
What is the result?
Leaders who are no longer guessing how to show up.
Teams that trust what they see.
Organizations that operate with clarity and credibility.
Because when a leader keeps a clear promise—
People follow.
My Friend, are you ready to Elevate Your Leaders?
If your organization is ready to move from ideas to action…
from goals to promises…
from inconsistency to credibility—
It starts with one question:
What is the promise your leaders are making—and keeping?
