The Actor’s Promise

I talk about Jim Carrey a lot.  As in I refer to him in most speeches, shows, in blogs, and in every coaching/training for perfomers.

The man is a genius.

The man is polarizing.

You very well may hate him, but I love him, and this is my blog.

More people say I remind them of Jim Carrey than anyone else.  There couldn’t be a greater compliment for me professionally. Even my Kindergarten teacher phoned my parents when “Ace Ventura”, Jim’s first movie, came out, and said, “This actor stole your son’s routine!”  That’s a true compliment.

For the first 12 years of this career performing my One-Man Show of Comedy & Music Impressions I ended my show with one routine: Jim Carrey in a normal job situation, working at Subway as a sandwich artist.

I don’t recall a time it didn’t get me a rousing standing ovation.  (ok, maybe once)

The set-up is, and always was, to teach the point that Jim Carrey always kept the Promise to The Audience as an Actor.  He used his Signature Moves to entertain whoever was watching, and he would do this whether in a comedy club to start his career, on a movie set in the middle of his amazing run, or even in a fictional setting such as working a normal everyday job at Subway.

Hope you enjoy this routine – it is officially retired from my repertoire due to the obvious physical pain I inflicted on myself when doing the bit, at least 2,000 shows over a decade.

Question for you is this:

How do you keep the Promise in all that you do and say, no matter your Audience, your Career, your current opportunity?

Jim Carrey is legendary because he is a promise keeper sharing his incredible gift of making us laugh every single performance.

Jason, in the early years of Jim’s work on the show “In Living Color”, was some of his best skits and creative work…. Your work is equally as entertaining but you always seem to weave into your shows the real message you are trying to get across…. “The Promise” that we all should make to each other, to our family, to our faith… Please “Promise” us that you will keep sending these messages forward. Much like paying it forward to help others, we all need to pay your message forward…. Thank you my friend…

Wow Chuck, this means a lot. Yes, I’ve always weaved in the underlying message and grateful for those that pick up on it like yourself. Thank you again my friend.
