What’s the deal with someone who is terrified of speaking?
Truth is: Speaking may be the very scariest thing for a human to do, according to some research about how difficult speaking is.
According to Jerry Seinfeld ~ People prefer dying over speaking at the funeral.
How can you get over your fear of speaking? Are there techniques which can be learned? YES!
This past week we had our first Speaker club events, on Wednesday and Saturday, where I sat with aspiring speakers, and those who are looking to improve their communication skills, for everything from job interviews, to Zoom calls with their teams, to being a better leader with their kids.
I was thrilled to see a room full of friends supporting our efforts, including a fabulous speaker (7dailyhabits.com) named Laura Porreca who drove all the way up from Las Vegas, 6-hours one-way, to attend our SLC, UT event! She gave me perhaps one of the kindest testimonials I’ve ever received, calling my teaching of speaking, “Groundbreaking compared to what she’d seen offered anywhere”. Awesome!
I appreciate those who are supporting the Speaker Club, and we will have another 2 free events this week, Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 1-2:30 PM, and Saturday, Nov. 20 from 8-9:30 AM. I have shared many livestreams over the past few weeks, on Facebook and LinkedIn, leading up to Speaker Club, and this one is regarding having watched a terrified speaker stand up and give one of the worst speeches I’ve ever suffered through as she read the entire talk without looking up once.
In the video I suggest a few ideas for the terrified speaker:
- When you’re scared to speak, remember one main tip: The Audience actually WANTS you to succeed. We are not interested in watching a trainwreck…we are cheering you on to be amazing on our behalf and to avoid your embarrassment!
- Prepare, practice, and be BRAVE!
- Come to our Club and learn all the rest!
The Promise to improve ourselves is a significant and challenging one, yet a practice of discipline that will move the needle of our success.
Only those who are interested in “experiential learning” will take the plunge into a Speaker club environment, where you will prepare and share aspects of your speaking you strive to improve, doing so in front of peers who are cheering you on.
Equally, I will dissect your abilities, along with the greatness of speakers like John Maxwell we will watch on video, pausing and discussing every move and what it means. There is no training like this.
What habits and rituals have you Promised yourself to do consistently that have paid off?
I’ll start with some of mine: Waking Up at or before 5 AM, Daily Exercise and Focused Meals.
Ever since I took control of this aspect of my life, all other things have fallen into place, even when storms rage around me, as I am able to keep my mental health and emotional well-being intact because of my personal health Promise.
When we make and keep The Promise To The One, we are able to Keep The Promise To Everyone.
