Last month, my incredible, wonderful wife of 25 years turned 50.
Tami is the most important person on the planet to me, and I knew it was the kind of birthday you need to go big or you can’t go home.
When she turned 40 we did a huge surprise party, combined with her best friend since 7th grade, Courtney, and they haven’t stopped talking about it for a decade.
How do you top that?
You don’t, you just let it be what it was and remain thankful it happened.
But you can’t let 50 just come and go, either.
So for 50, I worked for 6 months with friends to come up with a more intimate party of her closest friends, combined once again with Courtney’s 50th birthday, as her husband Beau and I planned another surprise.
Throwing a party for the ultimate party planners, which our wives happen to be just that as their Signature Moves in life, is quite the challenge. Even with an army of their friends helping us, we had to get extra creative.
The owner of the restaurant was in on it with us, and did some Oscar worthy acting, as we arrived for what we had positioned to our spouses as “a special tasting of top dishes” and were invited on a tour of the new location.
The owner then led us to the underground room, which was decked out with the ultimate party, decor, music, and fun.
“SURPRISE!” Enjoy the video to see how it all turned out.
Somehow, Beau and I pulled it off.
And I’ll tell you how: TEAMWORK with a whole lot of family, friends, and fans of two amazing women.
We were so grateful to think we could surprise these girls that are always serving everyone else, especially those in the hospital, sick and ailing, delivering meals all weeklong year round to the forgotten among us. In other words, these are the essence of what it means to be women of God, Christlike examples, never ceasing in service, nurture and love.
This summer Tami and I celebrate 25 years of marriage, and so it the kind of milestone year to celebrate all year long.

When you think of ways and reasons to celebrate those you love the most, how do you do it? A kind note? Support of their dreams? Posting about them online?
As we drove home, our wonderful wives were thrilled with what we had done for them, and also said we didn’t need to, since we’d already done so for 40, but that they loved it in it’s own way even better.
A big party isn’t always needed, but celebrating those we love is the absolute Promise in a relationship when important milestones and memory-making moments serve as opportunities to show gratitude for the most important people in our lives.

Surprise parties are so fun. I’ve planned and celebrated 2 surprise birthday parties for my sister. She also received a 3rd surprise party as a teenager, when I was too young to be the one planning that. Your wife is a blessed woman to have a husband who loves her and is willing to plan a party for her, even though you were intimidated by her own party planning skills. Way to pull it off!
Thank you Melinda for sharing. Pulling it off is quite the adventure, you’re an amazing sister!
