72 Hours of Greatness: The Legend of Redford Hewlett

For the past month we have hardly seen our 16-year old son, Redford. He is a straight-A student, leads our church congregation in music every Sunday, and seems to be asked to a girl’s choice dance at a different school every other evening. And yet he has gone missing for almost the entirety of December. Every morning at 6:40 AM he bolts out the door, always gets to school on time, and recently has even been gone before 6 AM. Each night we await his return, often past 11 PM.   What is happening with this boy?  He is an SBO, Student Body Officer, at his high school, and the month of December is dedicated to raising money for single parents in an effort termed Hearts of Gold.  Every SBO is expected to go door to door, business to business, looking to do service in exchange for a donation to raise funds for parents needing help with providing Christmas.     My son has kept the ultimate Promise by being completely absent from our home while serving every stranger he can find for an entire month. It’s hard to put into words how proud I am of this wonderful son,

The Broken Winch

For nearly a decade, we have relied on a steel cable winch to lift our swim spa cover up and off to the side, since it’s too heavy to for one or even two humans to lift in the space between our home and the neighbor’s fence. Over the past few years, it has slowly but surely deteriorated under the weather of snow, ice, sun, and being drawn in and out recklessly by all of us taking it for granted. The other day it finally gave out, no longer willing to budge another inch. I researched what could be done on YouTube, since that’s where we go now for the How-To issues of life. Confident with my newfound knowledge, having watched enough goatee’d, bandana wearin’, sleeveless shirt and tatted southern dudes drawl through the simplicity of replacing the wire cabling while filming from their home garage under a jeep on a lift, I armed myself with the necessary tools: Ladder Wire Cutter Bottle Nose Pliers Gloves Tobacco…since that was in the video…no, actually I just used Big League Chew, so I could feel like the guys I watched in the videos and chomp on something while I did the manliest

The Dad Health Promise – The Legend of Scott Law

On this blog, as you know, I am in constant search of ways to inspire you, and me, while watching others who are valiantly keeping, or sadly breaking, The Promise. I know I am the example most of the time of how I break The Promise and vow to do better. But today’s post is going to be written by someone else. Recently I opened social media to find this story of my friend, Scott Law, who lives in Texas, and I haven’t seen him in person in quite a while. Yet I wasn’t expecting this post, nor his latest triumph, that completely stunned me. I’ll be very honest: This is absolutely a dream of mine, to do what he’s just done. I find this inspirational, intimidating, and the ultimate Promise story. It helps me dare bigger, and when I asked if I could share it on my blog Scott said that’s why he shared a story that was meant to be private but couldn’t stay hidden anymore. I love it. I’ll let Scott tell it, as he posted to Facebook, and it has garnered thousands of likes, comments, and shares, because it is so amazing. Well done, Scott,

eBikes, AI & ChatGPT

Recently I was talking among friends about my Health Promise and daily routine of going to the gym by riding my bike back and forth before and after a challenging workout. I love this routine, as it is downhill, takes 15 minutes, and is the perfect pre-workout exercise as I joyfully fly to my gym, VASA. I then push the weights in the gym as hard as I can for 30-45 minutes, sit in the sauna for 10-15 minutes, and instead of returning to the parking lot to my car (as I will in the winter when it’s snowing), I put my helmet on and begin the arduous climb uphill to my home on the bike, which takes about 20 minutes. My buddy razzed me by saying to our friend, “Yeah, but remember, it is an eBike!” They laughed in my face, both much more fit than me, as they would never resort to using an eBike due to their histories of triathlons, OrangeTheory and CrossFit, and it was a friendly dig among pals, but also certainly rubbed me the wrong way. I was surprised this was brought up as a subtle slight to my valiant efforts, as if I

The Love of Work

At my desk I am slaving away to finish the slides and order I will speak for an upcoming presentation. It is hard work, requiring my mind to churn at an extreme rate, anticipating how the audience may respond and the possible turns speeches can potentially take with a phrase or word, song or comedy bit. I have to stand up, take a walk around, look outside, predicting what could happen if I insert a Lady Gaga song or Raptor impression to drive a point home, or choose instead to share a story the client asked me to include from their employee legacy vault of experiences that will most likely bring the audience to tears. I look from the 3rd story down to the grass below, contemplating the struggle I’m under in this thing I call WORK. Down in the weeds, bark, and bushes, I see a man hard at work. He is up and down, on hands and knees, wrestling with what appears to be sprinkler lines that won’t go the direction he needs them to. The pipes put up a fight, so he jumps back up, goes to his cart, grabs a tool, returns and cuts the line.

Sandbags to the Rescue

“If we don’t fill and place over 1,000 sandbags in the next week we could lose The Ranch.”  For over 100 years, our extended family has enjoyed the beautiful Pine Valley along the mighty Provo River east of Park City, Utah, considered by many to be the most pristine mountain valley in the entire State. Lush, green meadows, surrounded by massive pine and aspen trees of a protected forest service, many a hunter, fisherman, and surveyor have stumbled upon our oasis and wondered how could someone be so blessed to have a cabin or home in such a place? Our Great-Grandfather, Lester Hewlett, purchased 500 acres during the Great Depression just as hard times fell upon the country, and saved it from becoming public land or a reservoir in the high Uintah mountains. Leaving the legacy of this land to his children and grandchildren, AKA, The MSH Family (named after his amazing wife and our Great Grandmother, Margaret Stewart Hewlett), we have done our best to care for, and preserve, this rich heritage of property, spirit, and love among cousins. In the shadows of the biggest winter in Utah history, the runoff in spring would have the potential to

The Unavailable Barbell

Whether you can tell by looking at me or not, I workout every single day (except Sundays). If you accidentally touch my arm then you’ll know it’s true. Otherwise, just seeing me on stage, you’d never know that I live for the gym and to exercise. I LOVE IT. There’s a very simple move I’ve enjoyed for years, it’s for building your biceps/arms, called the Standing Preacher Curl. It’s where you stand behind a tall cushion, rest your chest against it, and drape your arms over the front of it with a barbell in your hands. From there, you curl upwards, keeping your triceps against the cushion, and get an incredible pump in your biceps as you bring the barbell to your chin. I have worked up to doing 4 Sets of 12-16 Reps with 50, 55, and 60 lb barbells. That’s a good amount of weight for anyone who is “natty”, meaning, Natural, and not poking their butts with the juice needle. Since summer began, something weird is happening at the gym – EVERYONE and their Mom seems to be there. Every hour, every moment, 5 AM, 2 PM, 5 PM, 11 PM.  It’s insane! But not everyone uses

80-hours to China and Back

Hi My Friend. This blog will be short and sweet. Last Tuesday I had an event in Chicago that was awesome. Tomorrow I leave my home at 4 AM to go to Indianapolis for my next event. I have had those booked for quite a while now. And then an opportunity came up that I couldn’t pass on, even if it would be physically nearly impossible to pull off. A life insurance group in Malaysia called, having their event in the “Las Vegas of China”, a fancy place called Macau. They needed me there on Friday as the Closing Keynote. Usually someone would go to the other side of the world and spend some time checking things out. However, I didn’t have time to do that, but realized I could make it work if I did the hardest turnaround of my career. That would mean 80 hours of travel without a break. Truth is: I never went outside the hotel other than to grab the taxi to and from the airport! Here’s the view from my window!     I returned home Tuesday night from Chicago, and left my home at 6 AM Wednesday for Seattle, then to Seoul,

Cleaning Before Cleaning

I’ve always found it bizarre that I need to clean the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.   I mean, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a dishwasher? To do the job of that which should do the job! I’ve been told that our dishwasher can actually handle whatever we stick in there. I don’t buy it, and have yet to test this out, as I don’t trust that’s even slightly possible. Along with the fact that I have the habit of doing dishes regardless of how well the dishwasher may or may not clean them, since during my youth it was necessary to hand wash the dishes. And so, as an adult, husband and father, I have found great peace – yes, even happiness – in cleaning dishes before I fill the dishwasher, which I do every night.  Yes, apparently that makes me weird for enjoying that task, and yet, I’m not alone. I read an article that surprised me, in Inc. magazine, of the habits of some of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos: Inc. says – “Bill Gates’s house is worth a cool $125 million. Jeff Bezos cashes in $1 billion a year in

$100 Tip

In my wallet I always carry a $100 bill. If my posting this leads to me being mugged, so be it! Come and get your Benjamin, you cranky little thief. I have it there as a “just in case” for when a credit card has some issue, the power is out at a store and I have to pay in cash, or I need to pay for parking at a pay station and they ask me for a smaller bill and we stare at each other since I don’t have anything else…and they let me park for free. But it’s MOSTLY there for one reason – on occasion I feel inclined to leave it hidden under the final bill receipt at a diner, bar, or restaurant, usually late at night, after a successful event, as I am starving from a long day. When I notice extra thoughtful service rendered, I feel it’s a cool thing to leave for a hard worker. I don’t film this or post selfies about it.  I have yet to do a party where everyone gathers around to watch me give this money, to be celebrated online for my “charity”. Most of the time my family
