Drawn to New Heights

A month ago I was leading a Speaker training & retreat with my colleague and master coach, Cheryl Knowlton. It was our final retreat and will always be a memory I’ll never forget to work with her and our students. I glanced over at the couch and was admiring the muscles bulging from my friend and fellow speaker Ernie Harker’s shirt. As I looked closer I realized he was drawing someone in the room. He is known for his ability to draw people on stage or in the audience, and gifts them to friends, to an always stunned reaction, since he’s masterful at this talent turned skill turned Signature Move and Promise. I was shocked to see that I was the subject of this drawing!     I have been all over the world and, for years, received perhaps some of the most offensive and bizarre quick drawn, paid for, portraits/caricatures someone can have drawn of them, often times in an attempt to embarrass the one being drawn. But as I looked over Ernie’s shoulder I was ecstatic to think it looked incredible, and was flattering to say the least! An artist must focus on the Signature Moves features

Breaking Bad on Labor Day

For those who read this blog, you may be surprised to see me referring to “Breaking Bad”, a TV show known for an extremely heavy, and illegal, array of topics…(of which, if I write the actual words here, this blog will be flagged and banned in certain areas of the world). But you also know I like to draw from many examples to teach The Promise, so here goes one that’s quite a stretch, but had a profound effect on me! It is Labor Day Weekend here in the United States, which was created to celebrate our efforts to work hard through the year, take a break and reflect on the opportunities of our employment, and have a literal hard stop. I confess that I work on every holiday. I enjoy my work, find great pleasure in working hard, and can, with both a tinge of guilt and equally some pride, admit that I have checked emails, texts, and taken calls on every holiday during my career. To me, that is The Promise. And conversely, breaking The Promise as well. Now, with that confession aside, let’s jump to “Breaking Bad”. 15 years ago I watched the first episode, and since

The Final Retreat

For years, I had what was known in our home as Mentor Mondays. This was due to so many texts, emails, and phone calls from executives, hopeful speakers, and struggling entertainers to “pick my brain” over lunch. Eventually my brain had been picked, pecked, and prodded over enough soggy salads at lunches around Utah that we shifted things to say: Can you come to me and let’s talk? We funneled everyone to Mondays, into 2 hour time slots and a revolving door of mentoring that sometimes saw people from 8AM-8PM learning the craft of running a business, following their dreams, and keeping The Promise to their hopes in life. It was my best way of giving back, after I had the same experience to begin my career, where Chris Poulos had welcomed me into his home, free of charge, to sit on his couch and learn from the greatest philosopher and spiritual mentor I could have asked for outside of my own wonderful parents growing up.     For years, day and night, I came and went to the Poulos household in Orem, UT, with his lovely spouse Gail in the background doing genealogy work at the living room table,

The Best Fathers Day Presents

Christmas Day was nearly 6 months ago (this next week), and it has been that long since I have enjoyed the gifts that keep on giving in our home. That cold wintry morning, as presents were strewn about the house, wrapping paper piled high, the kids were thrilled with what we had given them, but they had something else on their minds. Finally, when they were done opening theirs, they sat Mommy & I down to reveal a gigantic box, wrapped special, as we wondered what they had purchased for us. Our kids are now teens, and they have incredible imaginations and personalities, so we were curious, due to the grins on the faces of all, if they had a friend wrapped up in there to do a Jack-in-The-Box scare tactic, perhaps had re-gifted some white elephant presents, or had bought us a family of geckos. Instead, the box revealed many presents, all hand wrapped as well, in a nesting fashion, meticulously placed just right. Mommy & I took the top ones and began to carefully open them, only to reveal something we hadn’t expected: Individually framed pictures we would be able to place around the house of them,

Stepping Down When It’s Best For The Team – The Promise of José Abreu

This week, former MVP baseball player, José Abreu, was sent down to the minor leagues. It may not seem like significant news to a casual observer, as baseball players go minors to majors and back to minors often. Here are articles with ESPN and Yahoo Sports. For a former 3-time All-Star and MVP, who was the best player in the entire major leagues only 4 years ago, to suddenly be sent to the minor leagues, that is noteworthy and we must dissect The Promise from within this story of leadership. Who are the Leaders keeping The Promise here? First: The Coaches Since when do we want an MVP to not play on our team? Only the smartest, bravest, and gutsiest coaches know when it’s time to have a difficult conversation with those who were our best players and aren’t performing at their best, needing to make a drastic change.   Second: José Abreu His numbers have slowly gone down month after month for 2 years. He knows he’s not playing at the level he’s capable of, and instead of putting up a fight, he not only agreed with the coach’s decision, but also encouraged it. He owned up to

The Never-Ending Thank You Gift

Not wanting to exaggerate the numbers, I believe I’ve done about 3 mentoring calls per week for the last 15 years with those looking to become a speaker, wanting advice on business, or hoping to make it in the entertainment life of showbiz. I enjoy most of these calls, and feel it important to take every request for my time, as I had the right mentors to lead me from the beginning, while equally unable to get my heroes on the phone no matter how often I begged for their guidance. So, I made a promise a long time ago that if someone wanted to learn it would be my honor to see if I could help. Every single person who calls me thinks making a career as a Speaker, Entertainer, and Coach will be easy. Oftentimes the recommendations I suggest fall on deaf ears, as what I teach isn’t as easy of a path as the caller assumes it should be. When I say things like: Speak anywhere and everywhere for FREE until you are great enough to be paid Serve, lift, and help others get there, and they will help you as well Promise to write a

The Copyright Claim

Monday I woke up, excited to have a great day, and head out the door to my speaking event. Quickly checking emails (famous last words), I was hit with the kind of message every small business owner dreads: Copyright Claim! Yes, an image on this very blog was copyright protected and I owed nearly $2,000, since it had been on my site for 6 months. This sent me into a tailspin of questions, research and mining details, as I have not had an issue like this for nearly a decade, and truly thought I was covered with all images we use across the board. Turns out, I am in the middle of small-business targeting, blog-semi-celebrity status (meaning: I have a blog), a variation of fear mongering extortion from a foreign company, and very unclear licensing usage of images from the company I purchase an annual subscription that covers me for many things, except – surprisingly – not every single image I’ve used on this web site. Gah! Of all things, it was a photo of a steel winch. Yes, you read that correctly…something I could have very easily taken a photo of myself, since I own a steel winch,

Your Favorite President

Who is your Favorite President of the United States? And why? I grew up in the eras of Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and have raised children during eras of Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden. It’s amazing to think there have been so few presidents in my lifetime, only 8 of them, as I’m a few years short of having been around half a century. Watching people lead through recessions, responding to terrorism, initiating war, navigating pandemics, social issues, and have the magnifying glass of criticism for every decision, makes you wonder how come anyone would want to become president. When I think of the ultimate and favorite leader of our Country, I would have to say, in my lifetime, it would be hard to consider any that I have listed above, although perhaps with time they could be in a top 5-10 list. My Favorite President seems to be the one most people name: Abraham Lincoln. In my office alone I have 2 paintings, one bronze bust, and one wooden statue of Lincoln, along with one of George Washington praying at Valley Forge as the only other president on my shelves. I often look at these images of Lincoln and

2 GOATS This Week

The title of G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All-Time) is being overused at this point in all media, but if you ask most football fans, the 2 GOAT Coaches of College and NFL made headline news this week, within 24 hours of each other. Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, winner of 6 Superbowls in the last 24 years, and Nick Saban of University of Alabama fame, winner of 7 National Championships during his career, said goodbye. Belichick, 71, was forced out due to changing times and a few years of having a losing record, and for Saban it was just time as a 72-year old coaching young men. I’ve had a lot of coaches in my life, from the days of old in high school, to business coaches, fitness and nutritionist coaches, finance, speech, and vocal coaches… you name it, I have spent a great deal of time and money with coaches. A Coach is necessary to teach you what you can’t see about your efficiency, hold you accountable to what you’ve promised, and push you to new levels you didn’t know you had. The best Coaches for me have always had a great way of listening, empathy for excuses,

To See The Game – The Promise Broadcast

My phone rang and I picked up, despite the number not being in my phone. “Hello?” I said “Jason Hewlett, this is the new high school basketball Coach at your son’s school, do you have a minute?” “Yes sir, is everything ok?” I asked. “All is well. I heard you’re the only person who can do something for us that is a pretty challenging ask, to be frank, but I believe you’ll be up to the task,” he said. I figured he was going to ask me to come and speak to the players to pump them up before the game. I was wrong. I don’t think he actually knows what I do for a living. LOL Instead, he had been told about what I pulled off to save my career during 2020 when we all switched our lives to VIRTUAL events and broadcasting presentations to the world from our homes. The new head Coach laid out to me his vision of what he wanted the school to have for every boys Varsity basketball game this year: A LIVE, multi-camera, streaming broadcast, run by parents and students, that would be professional quality, no less! In years past the broadcast
