Middle Ages

This past week my article was about being crowned the world’s worst axe throwing dad. I gave it a good effort in putting a point to it – not the axe, but the story – as my 10-year old son, Royal, bested me in every way.  Even to my delight. But a comment left on the post by my friend, and one of the world’s great wordsmiths, actually knocked me off of my seat. I read it while in the Sky Lounge in the Minneapolis Airport, in between speaking at events and travel, and was so taken aback that people were looking at me as I was visibly shaken, laughing, and moved by the wonderfulness of his comment. Here it is, from the GREAT Thomas Cantrell:   Worry not, Jason, you do have a future alongside your famous axe throwing son. You have advanced in life to being Royal Squire* (or is that Royal’s Squire). Henceforth, thou shalt carry Royal’s axes, sharpen them, have them at ready for contest and conquest. *FYI ~ “Squire” was a term in the Middle Ages for a knight’s assistant. The squire served the knight as his assistant, carried his weapons and shield into battle,

Axe Throwing with Royal

Last week I was the Keynote Speaker for 2 different companies who just so happened to book me at the SAME event center in the SAME city on back to back afternoons!  That is considered the greatest luck of the draw for someone in my kind of career and worth 3 exclamation points!!! That meant I could take my best buddy, Royal, along with me for an overnighter, skip school, swim in the hotel pool, enjoy exploring the city, and have some one-on-one time with The Dude. As we awaited the start of the 2nd event, we found a fun center where you can try AXE THROWING at a place called LUMBERJACKED – boom! Royal was persistent in his request to try it and we paid for a half hour slot. The instructor gave us some tips, such as best way to stand, hold the axe, and to not toss it to each other… He then proceeded to easily flick the axe, hitting bullseye over and over again. Simple enough. Royal went for it, and proceeded to stick the axe over and over, getting closer to a bullseye with each attempt, gleefully squealing with delight at the simplicity of this

Best Lanyard Maker of All-Time: The Legend of Yori Lim

Are you ever assigned to do little things that don’t seem to matter? Have you ever been in charge of making a lanyard for an event? Have you ever seen a lanyard and thought, “Does anyone care about how pathetic and cheap this looks?”    Arriving at Stinker Stores in Idaho for their 2022 Leadership Level Up conference I received my lanyard, and, like usual, wasn’t about to put it on. Until I looked at it and nearly fell on the floor. It appeared hand made, but not in the bad way, no, this was handmade by a genius of the craft, a carefully customized piece of art, of great value in it’s perfection, something I will never throw away. The stuff Promise Legends are made of!   I accidentally screamed out, “Who made this??!!?”  My client, event planner, and awesome cousin, Nate Brazier, mastermind of the event (deserving of much praise as well for putting on such a spectacular conference), said, “Oh, isn’t that amazing?  Her name is Yori Lim, she always makes the lanyards, how cool is this one?”      I said, “This is legendary! Where is she?”  He pointed to a corner where she was

The Importance of Mediocrity

Glancing social media we will notice quickly our mediocrity in the face of everyone’s great accomplishments. The importance of mediocrity is realizing and embracing the fact that you have talents I don’t have, and I have talents you don’t want!  I spent 3 days recently trying to fix an issue in our bathroom as the basement flooded from our tub. After losing 3 days and not succeeding, I called my friend who is a fix anything kind of guy.  The job was done in less than 3 hours.  I sat in stunned silence as I kicked myself for not having reached out to him sooner. I know what I should do, but don’t always do it.  Often that means not doing a lot of things for which I’m mediocre. Acknowledging our mediocrity isn’t an excuse to never improve, rather it’s a license to freedom as we reach across the void of inability to allow others to shine as they can best.   As my friend fixed the tub, patched the ceiling, and masterfully displayed his gifts of construction, I made him laugh with stories and the time passed quickly. I tell stories, make others laugh, cheer others on, play the piano,

2 Brands Collide: The Promise vs. Jason Hewlett

Have you ever created something that you put your heart, soul, time, money, energy and everything into, only to face the reality that it’s not really working? I’m about to share something extremely vulnerable, and will attempt to do so succinctly (good luck!) so as to not belabor the point, but I have come to a crossroads with this most wonderful concept called The Promise and the brand that is me, Jason Hewlett, as I awkwardly take literary license and refer to myself in the 3rd person for this to make sense. The brand that is Jason Hewlett was created to entertain, uplift, inspire, be family-friendly, comedy heavy, musically nostalgic, educational at times, and equally be self-deprecating, never too serious, capable of poking & prodding where necessary, and always simple. The brand that is The Promise was an attempt to be an extension of Jason Hewlett, a more thoughtful context, a bit complex, the meat & potatoes content served after the milk & honey entertaining appetizer, revealing a stealth philosopher cloaked in a comedy experience.  The intention has been to teach, reach deep, help individuals and families, drive culture shifts in companies, and make complete sense to all interested

Speaker Club

What’s the deal with someone who is terrified of speaking? Truth is: Speaking may be the very scariest thing for a human to do, according to some research about how difficult speaking is. According to Jerry Seinfeld ~ People prefer dying over speaking at the funeral.     How can you get over your fear of speaking?  Are there techniques which can be learned?  YES! This past week we had our first Speaker club events, on Wednesday and Saturday, where I sat with aspiring speakers, and those who are looking to improve their communication skills, for everything from job interviews, to Zoom calls with their teams, to being a better leader with their kids. I was thrilled to see a room full of friends supporting our efforts, including a fabulous speaker (7dailyhabits.com) named Laura Porreca who drove all the way up from Las Vegas, 6-hours one-way, to attend our SLC, UT event!  She gave me perhaps one of the kindest testimonials I’ve ever received, calling my teaching of speaking, “Groundbreaking compared to what she’d seen offered anywhere”.  Awesome!   I appreciate those who are supporting the Speaker Club, and we will have another 2 free events this week, Wednesday,

Is Ted Lasso A Good Coach?

Ted Lasso just swept up at the Emmys. Good for them, it’s the best, and only, series on any streaming platform I’ve ever watched more than 3 episodes in a row. In fact, last year when I got a new computer and received the AppleTV+ subscription, I watched the first Ted Lasso episode and stated: “I would buy an AppleTV+ subscription just for one Ted Lasso episode!  It is THAT good.”   Now it has won all of the awards, and I agree it should have. The question is: Is Ted Lasso a good coach? I mean, he doesn’t even KNOW soccer…football…English anything essentially. Well, truth is, the premise of the show is built upon hiring Ted Lasso due to his lack of knowledge of the sport, and thus the beauty of the influence that his ignorance is bliss.  He changes the entire culture of the organization due to his Promise nature and Promise leadership traits. What does Ted Lasso prove? A Coach doesn’t need to be a Champion in the profession in order to coach others to success. Which begs the follow up question: Why would a Champion need a Coach? This question seems ridiculous, doesn’t it?  Of course Champions

Applause for Jim: AV Guy

Let’s highlight Jim. At 7 AM on Thursday morning I showed up for a standard sound check prior to speaking for TUG, an association I had been booked to speak for over 2 years. Finally the event, postponed since last year, was here! Something was wrong with my laptop not connecting to the system, even though it worked the day prior at my other event. Jim, the AV guy I just met, suddenly went into figure it out mode. If you’ve ever worked with an engineer or IT guy it’s like watching someone go into a phone booth and become Superman. I got out of his way as he went through every scenario. The Audience would arrive in an hour. He began running from his office, to his car, to every corner of the building coming up with solutions, never lost his cool, just went to work… Jim eventually got it figured out with another laptop, a connector from his computer to mine, and a faux projector set up that would not be used for the audience but would allow me to see the advancing slides in my computer. I have never seen anyone come up with this kind

When You’re In The Breadline

In the Depression-era film “Cinderella Man”, we see James Braddock, a once almost champion boxer in the grips of economic failure, his inability to provide for his family through boxing’s trade, humbly brave the infamous breadline while being recognized as the failed boxer. This movie is not for the faint of heart, especially if – you’ve suffered an injury (his was a broken right hand) that he had to continue using to fight, re-breaking over and over again, just to survive; if you’ve come on hard times financially in the past and had to downgrade aspects of your family lifestyle and felt you have let them down; if you’ve ever wondered where the next opportunity will come from.  In other words: I HIGHLY recommend this movie for most people at this point of 2021, especially if any or all of the above is true!   As it will bring you HOPE!  The Promise to consistently stay motivated and inspired by the Legendary Leaders of yesterday is one thing we have complete control over, no matter how difficult life becomes.  We can always fill our time with powerful, hopeful stories, such as James Braddock getting one more shot when all was lost,

Everything That’s Wrong In Your Life

Everything that’s wrong in your life is because you broke a Promise to yourself! You may not like that statement, but having now dug deep enough into this language and concept, it stands up with some heavy testing. And don’t think I’m just pointing one finger at you, because three are pointing back at me, and I can prove my point. What’s wrong in your life?   Overweight?  You broke a promise to yourself. Financially destitute?  You broke a promise to yourself. Terrible relationship?   You broke a promise to yourself.   Seriously, look at all of the things that stink about your life, anything that you hate about yourself, and it leads back to a broken promise! Your Health: Do you REALLY commit to working on it? Keeping that promise to do whatever it takes to regain it? Can you find your treadmill under all of that laundry?   Your Money: Did you really “invest” in that extra pair of shoes instead of investing in yourself, self-improvement, and your business? Do you have a financial advisor, and have you ever listened to and done what they suggest? How about learning to diversify your portfolio, and have different streams of income instead
