The Broken Team

  Doug sent a frantic text, Jenny replied in Slack, marketing in turn launched a premature email campaign, and customer service was immediately inundated with angry clients. Leadership meets, confusion all around, too many cooks in the kitchen, while ten people are working on the same task without being assigned to work together on any given project. The wheels are falling off the bus, or rather, they did a long time ago. In business culture, it is easy to observe where things aren’t working. Just set up a call with any employee and let them tell you the truth, once you’ve established what they say won’t be held against them. Just look at the confusion coming into customer service due to the latest mistake sent out. Just take a gander at Slack and see how well that’s being utilized. Who Does This Remind You Of?

  If I were to ask you who is the most reliable person you work with, what face and name comes to mind? We all have that person. Hopefully! If you’re lucky, they make up your team, your “work family” as I prefer to call it, and continually fill you with gratitude as one of the most underrated, and essential secret traits of success: consistency and reliability! The truth is simple: You Don’t Need to Be Impressive…You Need to Be Reliable. Reliability—not necessarily talent, brilliance or flash—is what actually builds trust, opportunity, and long-term success. When I think of reliability my mind goes to: the finance director who sends a report every night (just before midnight) to share the data from the day with the company founder and I, and has never missed doing so in 2.5 years (even on his honeymoon!); the person who thinks he’s “just an IT guy” but in reality is the one everyone turns to to get things done immediately, even outside of the IT realm, because he is so capable; the assistant who goes over the upcoming plans and events, and then checks off the boxes again to make sure nothing falls through the

The Promise from Italy

This morning I woke up at 5 AM. Sleep eludes me after what I have experienced in Italy. My wife and I, along with our besties, Beau & Courtney Carlson, are in historic Florence, Italy, home of history’s greatest Masters of Art. Yesterday we saw The David by Michelangelo, the day prior we saw The Last Supper in Milan by Leonardo da Vinci. I never thought I would be so blessed to see this in real life. Still can’t believe, and so grateful, they have survived this long. I am at a loss for words writing this blog, as we have driven from one city to the next in this glorious country after picking up our daughter, Ella, who has been an Au Pair (nanny) for the last few months since graduating high school. We head to Rome tomorrow to see more of the greatest works of art in human history, all inspired and guided by the hand of God. As powerful as each are, as overwhelmed as I was standing before these pieces which have inspired my own life’s work and art, weeping at the very sight and thought of what these artists went through to create such glory

BJ The Crab Guru

  In June our family knocked off a few more states in our motorhome that had eluded us for years even though they are close to our home. Racing from SLC, UT through the scorching Nevada heat, we made our way up the California coast, enjoying the Redwoods and chillier weather, before hitting the famous Hwy 101 and celebrating finally making it to the beautiful Oregon coast. We had to crank the coast out in quick time due to keeping a schedule with destination points of Seattle, WA, and eventually Vancouver, B.C., Canada, where we would stow the RV and hop on a cruise to Alaska for a week with extended family. Our friends had mentioned that we needed to stop near Cannon Beach, OR, at Kelly’s Marina, rent a small fishing boat, and go crabbing for Dungeness Crab.           It’s a tall enough order for me to even drive an RV, let alone now become a boat captain and teach my family how to crab… But we made our reservation anyway and found an empty parking lot, full of mud, rain, and one single truck next to ours.     That’s when BJ came strolling

This past week I received phone calls and texts from the following: A former American Idol semi-Finalist An NCAA Basketball Champion and local Utah Jazz legend A viral Instagram & TikTok Star/Comedian The Founder & Owner of a multi-million dollar health company Each of these amazing people, the top of their field, reached out with one question: How do I become a Speaker?  I told each of them they had the wrong number. Kidding. I am honored they’d reach out. Despite the success in their field, they need some guidance from someone who is doing what they want to do in the speaking world, and they knew to call me. I am thrilled they would think of me, as years ago, they only would have called me to perform for their sister’s backyard birthday party and ask me to do so for free… Now instead they realize they have a friend in the speaking business. When I began my career as an entertainer I reached out to many celebrities who never contacted me back. Very few gave me the time of day. Talking with a Human

  My cell phone number is on the Home Page of my web site. It is also strewn about the internet in every place possible. For years I refused to have my number out there, due to the distraction and lack of privacy it afforded me, as well as having managers, agents, and others deal with the requests. It was helpful, as it kept me out of arm’s reach from the crazies, and there are crazies out there that will stalk you. But then I remember an issue I had that could not be resolved where I called a company and absolutely, no matter what, couldn’t get a hold of a human. The automated process was unresolvable in every way, and I could never get someone on the phone to clarify my issue. I lost a great deal of money due to this issue and never speaking to a human. It was that day I changed one of the biggest rules of my business: My cell phone was now published everywhere. The Promise in my business became COMMUNICATE as much as possible, be infinitely reachable, and even over-communicate where necessary. Cleaning Before Cleaning

I’ve always found it bizarre that I need to clean the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.   I mean, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a dishwasher? To do the job of that which should do the job! I’ve been told that our dishwasher can actually handle whatever we stick in there. I don’t buy it, and have yet to test this out, as I don’t trust that’s even slightly possible. Along with the fact that I have the habit of doing dishes regardless of how well the dishwasher may or may not clean them, since during my youth it was necessary to hand wash the dishes. And so, as an adult, husband and father, I have found great peace – yes, even happiness – in cleaning dishes before I fill the dishwasher, which I do every night.  Yes, apparently that makes me weird for enjoying that task, and yet, I’m not alone.   I hired a photographer to update my head shots. There’s an old joke about not updating your head shots enough. It’s the one where the event planner hires the speaker, prints his head shot, and goes to the airport to pick him up for the event. Waiting there, she is looking at the head shot, comparing every person walking by, anticipating his arrival. Suddenly, an old man, disheveled and worn out, walks up to her and says, “Hi, I’m your Speaker!” The event planner looks down at the head shot and back up at the speaker, and says, “Wow, how bad was the flight?” It’s a tough thing to get older, especially for speakers and performers, as head shots need to be updated more frequently than ever once we go from youthful to…what’s it called? Oh yeah! OLD! As I looked in the bathroom mirror, prior to driving to the appointment, I noticed every flaw… When did those hairs grow back from my ears? I thought I clipped them yesterday! I wish I could lose this belly that came back during my injury. I’m working out every day and eating clean…not sure what else I can do.  Where’s my

Make A Wish

A chronically ill child requests one person for their Make A Wish…and it’s you! Do you drop everything and go?   Do you talk yourself out of it due to schedule?  Do you chicken out because you don’t know what to say?  If you’re John Cena, you make a wish happen no matter how busy or famous you have become.   John Cena is a wrestler, turned actor, turned America’s Sweetheart. His Signature Moves went from crushing people in the ring to granting wishes like a genie.  This giant of a man has a gigantic heart, literally dropping all things in his way in order to fulfill the wishes of kids who wish to meet the one and only impressive dude himself. I have never been asked to be someone’s Make A Wish.   If I were, I would question their ability to truly make a wish. I’d even show up to discuss with them who they could wish for instead, and then recommend John Cena. It has been publicized this week that Cena has just set a World Record for most Make A Wish wishes granted. I didn’t know this was something that could be set as a record,

Son Saves Mom from Drowning

Son saves his Mom from drowning after she suffers a seizure! A Mother, Lori Keeney, and son, 10-year old Gavin, were having a great morning swimming in their backyard pool. Gavin got out to dry himself off, when he heard splashing and struggle, realized his Mom was in trouble, and jumped back into the pool to help keep her head above water. She was having a seizure. The child swam to her, wrapped his arms around Mom, and then swam over to the steps, holding his Mom up to keep her safe. After about a minute, the Grandpa heard cries for help and came to everyone’s aid. But had a young 10-year old Gavin not reacted immediately, things could have ended up much worse for his grateful Mother, Lori, who now calls her son her Hero. What an amazing and uplifting story!
