The Villages: A Dream Come True

For 26 years I have been told I should perform in very specific markets, as they would love my show: Las Vegas, NV Branson, MO Atlantic City, NJ Cruise ships worldwide Every Casino possible Corporate and Education events The Villages, FL   Having conquered the first 6, thankful for the chance to entertain audiences of all kinds, it was a question as to how and when I would ever have the time or opportunity to perform at The Villages near Orlando, Florida. Last weekend my moment finally arrived! If you don’t know what The Villages are, its one of the most fascinating community developments in the world, dedicated to those aged 55+ active adults who are committed to staying healthy, agile, and forever young. An estimated 75,000 homes dot the landscape, with over 100,000 residents.  Located an hour outside of Orlando, Florida, The Villages has endless town squares that look like Disneyland’s Main Street, more golf holes in one place than anywhere on the planet, and you can hear pickleball being played the entire day. The theater was intimate, brand new (3 months old), with around 160 seats available. My show was scheduled for 1 PM on a Friday where

Last Day at 47

My 48th birthday was Wednesday, June 24. On Tuesday, as I considered the final day of my year at 47, I sat at the car dealership where we bought our Toyota Sienna minivan 15 years ago, nearing 200,000 miles, and all the memories in the world as the only car that has remained with us so long. The technician came in, after 2 hours of my wondering, and gave me the diagnosis: he could fix $1,978 worth of issues. I found that number particularly ironic, as that was the year of my birth. As I declined most of what he suggested, since it was more “you should do this eventually” than an emergency issue just yet, he agreed that what is being recommended is actually quite far from being broken. I often feel like this car. I have some miles on me at this point. 40’s are interesting. I’ve heard 50’s are really interesting! As I cross the threshold to 48 there are some people reading this thinking, “Oh man, you just wait!” or “My goodness, to be 48 again!” Those reading this who are younger may think, “It can’t be that dramatic”. Yes, it actually is. I spend

25 Year Anniversary: The Promise of Marriage

June 14, 2001, I accomplished the most successful moment of my life: Tami Spenst married me. All that I have done in life comes back to this culminating point and I don’t take it for granted ever.     What many who are planning their special union seem to so often forget is that the wedding day is just that: one fine day. Marriage is what we focus on, make as right as possible, and keep promises that are daily with consistent actions that lead to greater trust, happiness, and fulfillment. The ups and downs have been well documented, and continue to surprise us as we go along. And yet, that has also been such a grand aspect of the adventure! The richness of life is in the struggle, joy is found in sadness and triumph, faith in God, and believing in us as a partnership. Once the kids came along, that just continued to seal the deal. How could I be so fortunate to have the ideal Wife who suddenly becomes the ultimate Mother of this caliber? How do our children continue to be such good humans? I blame it on their Mother.     I sit in

The Power of Writing Notes: The Promise of Showing Appreciation

Our son, Romney, graduated from high school on Wednesday. He is our third child to do so in the last three years, so we are getting the hang of this time of life and transitionary period, as equally sobering and joyful as it is. We are very excited for all he has planned, as the world awaits our amazing boy. A few weeks before his big day, I walked in the kitchen and found him sitting at the table in deep contemplation, actively accomplishing something I’d never seen him do: writing with a pen, surrounded by stacks of notes and envelopes, along with great intention. He didn’t notice me, so I took his photo and left him to do his work. A few hours later after he was done, and I asked what he had accomplished. He said he was writing letters of appreciation to his friends. He described how it was important to him to write a note to everyone he had served with in student government as the SBO Spirit Leader of the school his senior year. He mentioned his older brother, Redford, had done the same a year prior, as had their older sister, Ella, before

The Mother’s Day Promise

Happy Mother’s Day to the special women reading this and the ones we celebrate at this wonderful time of year. I tend to also prefer to include the most important girls, young ladies, and all women in my life on this day, as some may not have reached the age to be a Mother yet, or have found a different path in fulfilling their life’s purpose, and I am hopeful all feel welcomed and loved on this day. My Mother, Marsha, had a birthday a few months ago. She is in terrific health, it is astounding to watch her play with the grandkids and being so mobile, as if she’s never slowed at all even in her 70th decade of life. A few weeks ago I felt it important to celebrate my Mom’s birthday, and the upcoming Mother’s Day, with a special trip including my wife, Tami, my daughter Ella, and my sister, Haylee. Ella left for Juneau, Alaska for the summer on May 1, so we had only a limited amount of time to be together in April. I had seen that a classic movie is playing at The Sphere in Las Vegas, one that has been a

The Ultimate Ski Crash and My Latest Concussion

I Was Having the Best Ski Runs of My Life… Until I Wasn’t I’ve skied my whole life. I grew up in Park City, Utah. Yes, I spent as many days on the mountain as I could through my entire youth. And when I get the chance now, I’m still out there (usually at Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon, SLC, UT) doing what I’ve always loved to do.     I’ll just say it plainly: I’m a very good skier. I like to go fast. I like to push it. I like to feel my legs burn by the end of a run because I’ve gone all in. Is this surprising? I’m The Promise Guy – that means, I’m all in on pretty much everything I do. But the last few times I’d been out skiing, something felt off. My skis were… sticky. Not terrible. Just enough that I noticed it. Enough that I kept thinking: “I really need to wax these.” But like a lot of things we know we should do…I didn’t. Because I didn’t want to take the time. I wanted more runs. More speed. More time on the mountain. Until finally, on this particular day, I

The Wisdom Teeth Promise

My son had his wisdom teeth removed. As he came out of sedation, he had previously asked my wife to ensure the result was captured on video, as he hoped it would be funny to watch later. My goodness, was it ever. In fact, she turned the camera on him as he went LIVE online to the delight of the now viral amount of people who found this hilarious. Context: Romney is very funny, yet extremely reserved, and talented at many things, but few people know that he is an incredible singer, as he won’t sing in public – ever. He’s too embarrassed. UNLESS he’s coming out of surgery! Well, here’s the big reveal! LOL! A mix of Seal’s “Kissed By A Rose” and Frankie Valli’s “Sherry” have him singing through gauze pads from the back of the minivan at full voice. Enjoy. Instagram link HERE   I hope that made you laugh as it did so many others. This is a process we have been through before, in fact, it is our second year in a row doing this. Not his teeth removed, but his brother before him. In anticipation of submitting his papers to serve a mission for

200 Pounds Lost: The Legend of My Brother Josh Hewlett

Every now and then, you hear a story that doesn’t just inspire you—it stays with you. This is one of those stories. It’s about my brother, Josh Hewlett.  Josh was born in the mid 1980’s, my second brother, fourth of five kids, and was by far the largest baby in the family. “Big boned” was what Dad used to say. Mom delivered 5 of us little Hewlett’s, and Josh was going to easily outgrow all of us.      By middle school, even though he was 6 years my junior, he was already as tall and weighed more than me.      Josh played football, could pick up a fridge or couch, and was a literal strongman from his youngest years.  But through the years his big boned nature went to a new level of being overweight, and became a great concern for our entire family and all who knew him.      This is the kind of story you may have heard only on TV or in movies, but for us it’s real life, and it’s my brother, so I have to share this extraordinary story of transformation.  It’s a story about health. It’s about humility. And it’s about
