Farewell to Ella Rae

We have 4 children ~ 3 boys and 1 girl. Our daughter, Ella Rae, is the oldest, just barely a year older than Redford, who is Irish twins with Romney, and Royal came a few years later. As I joke in my presentations, “We had 4 kids in 5 years…a Utah tradition.”     My beautiful baby girl, and now grown up daughter, Ella Rae Hewlett (20), has recently been set apart as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She will join her younger brothers in the mission field, Redford (19) in Santa Fe, Argentina, and Romney (18) in Antigua, Guatemala. She will serve for 18 months in the Lima Limatambo Peru Mission. Her brothers serve for 2 years. Her new title will be Hermana Hewlett, as her brothers are both Elder Hewlett (and you can only fathom how our tricky last name is pronounced by strangers in Spanish…hilarious…usually “Emlich” or “Heblet”).     We will not see them in person for the duration of their service, as visiting your kids is not allowed. They are totally dedicated and focused on service, from dawn to dusk, living with a companion (selected by a

The Event I Said No To

Why would a speaker or performer ever say NO to an event? It doesn’t happen often, but it is something I have had to do throughout my career for various reasons. Oftentimes it is a soft “I’m sorry, but I’m already booked that day”, which is one kind of saying no, and being extremely bummed about it. Other times, the company may just not be a fit, or I might not be the right answer for their needs, and I’ll say no by sending a referral of a better speaker or performer for what they’re looking for. This happened the other day when I was asked to stand at a trade show booth for 4 days in Orlando and do a 10-min show every 30 minutes for 12 hours per day to draw people to the booth. Nope. Wrong guy. I sent a few ideas their way, and hope they’ll use them. This week I got an inquiry about Emceeing a wedding. Not in my wheelhouse! Sent it to a friend. A few years ago I landed a commercial for a new and fun chapstick company. They were so impressed with what I could do with my lips they

They Can’t Answer a Question You Never Ask

Over the past few weeks, I’ve done something on this blog that I don’t do very often. I asked you for help. Not once. Twice! First, I asked a question I’ve been wrestling with for years: What problem do I solve? I shared on THIS BLOG post that after more than 25 years of speaking, entertaining, teaching The Promise, working with incredible organizations and audiences around the world, I still struggle to articulate one simple thing: What is the specific problem people hire me to solve? And you responded. Some publicly. Some privately. Some with answers I hadn’t considered. You took time to think about my work, my message, what you’ve experienced from me, and what you believe I bring to an audience. That meant a great deal to me! Then, a few weeks later, I discovered something even more embarrassing… I Googled myself! (yikes) Here’s that blog post, in case you missed it. This is something I highly recommend doing if you’d like to simultaneously inflate and destroy your self-esteem. Of course I discovered that after 25+ years in business, I essentially had ONE Google review. One! (Brad, you’re the best, whoever and wherever you are.) So once again,
