My Yoda, My Mentor: Chris Poulos 1931-2021

Tuesday was busy.  Life and Christmas errands got in the way, and suddenly the week was filling up with last minute needs, but I went anyway. A 45-minute drive to my old mentor’s home, Chris Poulos, whom I hadn’t seen in months due to my travels, kids being sick, and his frail state of health over the past year. But this was Christmas week and there was one person I absolutely had to see, since I had promised him I would come to give him a hug. I’ve never been more grateful that I kept The Promise to make a trip to Provo. I didn’t think that would be our final goodbye on “this side of the veil” as he called it. Christmas morning, my Yoda, my Mentor, my Best Friend, passed away at 90 years old…he didn’t even warn me he was headed out…I bet he knew. The following is what I posted on social media, as well as an article and video I wrote a few years back honoring him.  I’m too overwhelmed to write much more at the moment, but hope you can feel of my gratitude for having known this legendary man.   ~

What Gift Will You Give?

Christmas is this week, and many holidays are being celebrated this time of year – I hope you have a wonderful season filled with traditions and memories. These are times to be with family, eat til we’re filled, and be grateful for our health. Conversely, this may be a time of mourning the passing of a loved one or lost relationship, a season that isn’t as bounteous as years past left for wanting from the cupboard & bank account, or possibly you may be struggling with a debilitating illness/latest virus making it’s way through your world. In all of this, I think of you & hope in your trial you can find The Gift. For a friend of mine who finds this time of year extra difficult & lonely, he is giving himself The Gift of getting lost in his work, photography & art; For a widow having her first Christmas alone, she is giving herself The Gift by enjoying hot chocolate while viewing old photos, videos, and reflection of the wonderful years past, resolving to carve a new path in keeping The Promise to find happiness in the simple moments moving forward; For the peer who is thriving, constantly

The Profitability of Integrity

Did you hear the fascinating story about the French mountaineer who found a box of precious gems and decided to do something most wouldn’t do?  Read on! ~ Can you make money from your Integrity? I stand firm in the belief that people do business with those they TRUST, can COUNT ON, and when you say you’ll do what you are going to do – Keep a PROMISE – that leads to more opportunity. Seth Godin says, “The Best Marketing is retaining the customer who already buys, more than needing new ones every time”, and those who return are the ones who know they can count on us, due to our Integrity of promises-level living. Can you gain financial benefit from integrity? Take the mountaineer who came upon a metal box poking out of the snow on Mont Blanc near the French-Swiss border, for instance. Opening it up, he found a treasure trove of precious gems: emeralds, rubies, sapphires!   Put yourself in the weathered boots of the hiker.  Looking around you realize you’re all alone.  No one saw your discovery. What would you do?  No one would have ever known had he just stuck the valuable box in his

You Never Know Who’s Listening

A few weeks ago I did an event, called a “fireside”, where the entire city was invited, and the high school auditorium rented out, with an expected audience of over 1,000 for a Saturday evening. From the looks of things about 100 people showed up. When you get 10% of the audience you were expecting, as an event planner, you are disappointed, especially when it’s a free gift to the community to deliver a presentation that they feel is valuable to bring in. I have had this happen so often in my career, where many are expected and few arrive (for a variety of reasons), that it has become something of a running joke to me.  And that’s the only way we can look at it, as I can’t take it personal or I would have given up my career by now. If you judged it by your performance and delivery on the backend then you would never continue with your projection and dreams, but when you judge it by people’s schedules and life getting in the way of attendance and showing up in the first place, I don’t hold it against people, I have learned and written about
