Royal’s Pumpkins and Keeping The Promise to Enjoy This Season of Life!

Royal wanted me to carve this football pumpkin!?! As if I’m Leonardo da Pumpkin carver. I tried my best, and Royal held up my “sorry son, this is the best I can do” attempt, loud and proud!     And then he carved his own pumpkin, gleefully stabbing it in the head in the photo & video below!     As I walked up the mountain today, on my final hike of the year on a road in Butterfield Canyon that will soon be closed, I passed a young couple with babies in their backpacks. Ahhhh, the good old days! That was quite the season of life! There have been many since.     It struck me when I got home, and Royal was begging me to carve a pumpkin, that wow, he’s the only one of my children left that wants to carve a pumpkin with dad!  Sad.  But JOYOUS!  Thankful we still get to carve a pumpkin together and be excited about it. Perhaps the football above is the final pumpkin carving for me as a dad? As he grows up and runs off for Halloween, like the older ones do now, it is fun to reflect

Walk To Water

What is your Promise Impact? Recently my friend, Heidi Totten, perhaps one of the greatest Impact Makers I’ve ever known, told me she and her gal pals were going to do a “WALK TO WATER” for women in Kenya: each of her friends walking 100 miles over a month+ long adventure. I asked if I could join in.  She said I’d be the only guy, but of course I could walk along with their efforts. So, for the last month+ I’ve walked over 100 miles!  I think I’m actually close to 150. By the end of this stretch I hope to be near 200 miles. Here’s a photo of today’s effort, which ended up being 6 miles.     In support of women who have to walk way too long in order to get water for their families, I have dedicated time, effort, and my body to this cause.  Some seriously sore joints, hips, and feet. It has been joyous! I love stuff like this, which actually makes a tangible difference. Since Heidi knows the people the money we are raising in our walking efforts is going to, and is even headed to Kenya next week to let them in

You Missed It: Live2Lead

If you weren’t with us in SLC the past few days then you missed out in a big way. Our Live2Lead event was a HUGE success, and the ultimate launch to The Promise Institute. It was incredible to sit back and watch as our Founders led the way, guiding the VIP Experience with The Leadership Game (which blew people’s minds), a world-class filet mignon meal, networking with some of the most wonderful leaders you’d ever want to meet, and enjoying a full day of some of the best speakers on the planet, cultivated by John Maxwell. I even had the chance to stand outside and greet attendees!   I am so proud of Allen Roberds (pictured above), who brought JMT’s Live2Lead to Salt Lake City, a big investment and risk, in case people don’t show up, and he was masterful leading the VIP Experience Leadership Game, and the entire day for us as Emcee & Host.   I am so proud of Heidi Totten, for her bravery in sharing how The Promise Institute began, speaking following Jamie Kern Lima’s powerful story, and adding to the value of what was said in creating one’s Promise Impact with her own story of

One Moment

I was 21. My Dad had told me about how great this entertainer was, someone I had never heard of, who had just signed a $150 Million contract in Las Vegas as an unknown headliner, and was the talk of the town. We took our seats.  Lights went down.  Music cranked.  Suddenly he appeared and blasted into the best entertainment moment I had ever witnessed in my life…and everything changed. I knew, in that very moment, exactly what I could become, what I’d have to do, and who I could aim to become like. He was right there in front of me.  And it became an obsession to be like this man. One moment can change your life. WHAT WAS YOUR MOMENT? There could be many moments you might point to – but in terms of your dreams, career, all you ever hoped might become your future – there was just ONE moment. Mine was at The Mirage, March 2000, watching Entertainer of the Year Danny Gans perform for the first time. I got chills, not just because of how good he was, but because I saw what I could become. What was your moment? ~ As a Speaker who

The Revenant is 2021

Have you seen “The Revenant”?  It’s not for the weak of heart. If 2020 were a movie scene, it would be when mountain man Hugh Glass (played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who won an Oscar for this one) is mauled by a mother grizzly bear and left for dead. That is the scene that gets all the glory for its gory and storied tale.   It is a true story!  Incredible he survived!  And then we follow Hugh being pulled from place to place in his compromised state by his mostly disinterested peers and very concerned son. What is overshadowed by the bear scene is what comes next. If 2021 were a movie scene it would be the part when Glass, laying and dying from what’s just happened from the bear, is mostly paralyzed from his wounds, and watches horrified, helpless, and voiceless, as his nemesis kills his only son before his very eyes…and then buries Glass alive. True story. That’s how 2021 has felt to me. How about you? I know you come to this blog for uplifting stuff, and you should, it’s my promise to you that you will learn, be entertained, and engaged. But what I’ve gotten out of

Worst Service Ever

Sitting in a restaurant the other night I wondered if our food was ever going to come to the table after having waited an unreasonable amount for a server to take our order before remembering to bring water. As a business owner, I know there is an employment challenge right now, and as those in my party complained of the service, all while we sat there parched, we also discussed The Great Resignation. As a business owner and leader, I don’t want any customers to have this experience with me. Even though I have struggled to survive the past 19 months of pandemic life as a public speaker switching to virtual and back to in-person again, we are still serving the client and keeping The Promise the best we possibly can. As a customer waiting on his food, I can also sit and complain about leadership in the place I chose to frequent. Perhaps I won’t come back due to “slower service” even if the food is decent? However, from my perspective, I felt it more important that day, in that moment, instead of becoming The Critic to choose my perspective and reaction to the situation with my Promise to Lead: Compassion. Understanding. Empathy.

What Do NYC, Honda, & The Homecoming Dance Have in Common? The Promise To The Family

This morning my wife and 2 oldest sons finally hopped a flight to NYC for a trip we have promised all of our children for their 13th birthdays. Seeing Manhattan when you’re from Salt Lake City, Utah is like going to…Manhattan. There’s nothing to compare it to, it’s so astounding.  Maybe Mars? Sadly, Redford turned 13 in the beginning of the pandemic last year, and then Romney turned 13 this year just as we were all down with COVID.  Financially it just hasn’t been a possibility.  But then – The other day we revealed that I have cashed out all of my SkyMiles, Marriott points, and donated my appendix to science (which surprisingly wiggles it’s nose!)… and they are thrilled to be going to NYC! I can’t wait for them to experience it with their travel savvy and fun Mom.  NYC with Tami is like any trip with her, she’s the funnest person you could ever travel with.  I’m so excited for them. ~ Our youngest, the Royal boy, turned 10 on Tuesday.  No more single digit children in the Hewlett household!   So sad.  But wonderful to watch these kids grow up. We surprised him with the greatest gift
