Mark Eaton Remembered

Woke up this morning to the stunning news that my lifelong friend and hero, NBA All-Star, and world-class Speaker, Mark Eaton, CSP, had suddenly passed away following a bike accident near his Park City, UT home last night. Still not wrapping my mind around this, I went to my texts and thought of just texting him to see if it was true…but then scoured the internet for confirmation, as it was nowhere on Facebook, ESPN, CNN, or other outlets.  Finally located enough resources that it appeared it was true and posted a few different posts on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter to alert our Speaker peers of this great man’s passing.     The stories of love, admiration, and honor came pouring in from around the world as news outlets shared the shocking news of Big Mark’s untimely death. Here are links to a few of the wonderful tributes they are paying to the legendary 7’4″ Giant of a man, Giant heart, from throughout the globe, and surely many more will be shared in the coming days. When You Are Under-Utilized

I don’t EVER recall in my career being hired to NOT: Be Funny Sing Do Impressions Do Parodies Share a Message They just wanted me to bring people to stage, introduce their needs clearly, and keep it all on time. That’s it! Have you ever been under-utilized?  This is a first of its kind experience for me, where I was hired to not do anything I’m known and renowned for, and instead to just read from a Teleprompter for 3 days! This story is CRAZY…perhaps unfathomable…to everyone I have shared it with. Enjoy! ~ I am seated backstage this very moment with enough time to write a complete blog while I am on call and at an event. That is rare. In 12 hours today, and 5 tomorrow, I will take the stage at least 30 times over this day and a half, totaling less than 15 minutes of total “on stage work”. This is my first HUGE production event back to “normal” (besides the temp checks, masks, social distance signs on chairs, and having to take a COVID test and passing as negative to get in), and there are nearly 1,000 people here in this massive ballroom with almost

300 Empty Chairs

One week ago I drove over 200 miles to give my keynote presentation for a first of its kind event in a small city in my home state: The Inaugural Business EXPO put on by the economic development of the city. Entering the ballroom of the beautiful conference center, it was wonderful to see 300 chairs perfectly set and ready for a big event the following day. Sound check lasted 4 hours that evening due to a glitch out of everyone’s control, but I was grateful to be working with an AV Team who lives The Promise and kept at it, cheerfully, until we came up with solutions to tricky challenges. I barely slept in my comfy Marriott hotel room bed, as I tossed and turned over an entirely new segment regarding The Promise Institute and our work in Kenya I would be presenting.  Yes, we are finally beginning to book expeditions in conjunction with the incredible organization 100 Humanitarians, all under the banner of The Promise Impact, and I was overthinking how I would say everything. The life of The Speaker!  hahaha Arriving 2 hours before attendees, we completed the sound check and all was set. And then

The Promise to Push Yourself

We are nearing the halfway point of 2021. It is highly likely a few of those New Years resolutions are either accomplished and filed away as a part of your History of Awesome, or they are long forgotten and will be reset next January. It doesn’t matter the time of year, or the phase of life, I wonder where you’re at in terms of pushing yourself. For me one year ago this week I was PUSHING everything to the limit – my virtual office capabilities to deliver content in an entertaining way on a ZOOM call, my body to stay up long enough to do the work required, my credit card to see how long we could last while the money slowly began to trickle in again. The effects of such a push means other things are neglected: My Family knew I was pressed, and time together was scheduled and not as frequent, my weight went up as I stopped walking and working out as usual, my reading of books temporarily stopped as I focused all efforts on learning my craft through YouTube. I finally pulled back at the end of last summer and took a minute to breathe. Refocused

Dealing with The Haters

Dealing with The Haters. How do you go about it? Pulling back the curtain for a moment here to go inside what’s behind a normal social media post…. Emotionally there’s always an initial sting to upload a video and then the next day see there are 8 views for your effort. 1 Like and 1 Dislike. On 8 Views. 8 views is admittedly disheartening…but it’s something! Grateful for the 1 Like…that person is kind! But what of the 1 Dislike? And then you just have to laugh. Who takes the time to just spread thumbs down all day? If you go through my videos and posts, I’m always amazed by how many thumbs down there are out there.     I ask myself: Who are these secret haters? The critics in the darkness, unwilling to comment and engage? And then I think: You know, I’d rather be in the arena, sharing the content, expressing my thoughts, take it or leave it, hate it or love it, and then I am inclined to create even more! As someone in the “spotlight” (meaning: 8 views in this case), I have learned to approach The Haters, The Hecklers, The Critics, from a

Ready To Buy

This past week I pulled up at the FORD Dealership and calmed my nerves. Knowing I was walking in the door in the next minute, I was the equivalent of a wiry wildebeest going for a swim in a lake full of crocodiles.   You know the feeling if you’ve ever been interested in a certain car and had specific questions, entering the sales floor with any intention to buy, you may as well skip down the street with wads of cash and jewelry hanging out of your pockets. Determined to be strong and not taken advantage of, I put my checkbook in my pocket, cracked my knuckles, kinked my neck, and decided to go for a swim with the piranhas. Upon entering a sales man came up to me, “How can I help you today?” Here it goes.  I felt like the kid on “A Christmas Story” about to tell Santa my greatest desire… “Yeah, so I’ve never bought a Ford before, but I’m very interested in the F-150 trucks I’ve been seeing everywhere and was hoping to check out what they look like inside,” I began. He started shaking his head, “Nope.  No, sorry man, we are OUT!”  (In

LIVE & 1,000+ In-Person Events Are Back!

This past week I spent multiple days onsite for an event over a year in the planning that refused to go Virtual. They knew they were taking a risk.  But they planned and executed their mission right. It was them Keeping The Promise To The Audience! It was my first flight to an event in 14 months. How welcome was it? Imagine working your butt off (literally!) sitting on DELTA flights all of 2019 while covering the planet to finally earn Diamond status after years of just missing it, and then you run into 2020… I had 3 flights to begin 2020, upgrades and First Class treatment, and haven’t seen a plane since. So how cool is it that I got to finally return to the friendly skies? Truthfully, the mask thing on the planes is a pain, but if that’s what has to happen, then I’m fine with it.     Upon landing, Uber also requires the mask, while Martin drove me through traffic, we pulled up to the beautiful hotel and resort to check-in. Didn’t even make it through the hotel doors before I was stopped by 3 security guards telling me to look into the machine that
