Awareness

The Vice President had an extra black fly in his extra white hair during the debate.  The fly became famous while no one could hear what the VP had to say, so distracting was the insect; The dog hesitated coming in the house, knowing she had an issue beneath her tail.  Encouraged enough by her unsuspecting yet doting parents to come in, she ran up the steps, leaped on the couch, across the carpet, raced to the bedroom, and sat on the pillow…only to leave behind a streak of poop throughout the home; The Zoom call was going well, every “Brady Bunch style” video tile filled with engaged co-workers having a great meeting, when suddenly an attendee is clearly seen walking from one room to another, unfortunately straight into the restroom.  Setting the camera in front of herself on the ground, assuming her video is off, she proceeds to go the bathroom in full view of her horrified peers. Awareness. How aware are you when the fly lands on your head, dog drags in a fresh tootsie roll, or the Zoom call captures your most private moments? There is only so much we can do to be aware of

Keep Going – A Tribute to Coach Tony Ingle

My best friend died of COVID-19 this week. My heart has ripped apart, consumed by grief, a fogginess clouding my brain ever since I received the news. Coach Tony Ingle got hit early December 2020 with the virus and called to tell me he wasn’t feeling so great.  As always, we laughed through the fear of what we didn’t know, him making jokes about his health and things he still needed to accomplish (such as an important speech in the summer), jovial as always, his Signature Move. Coach Tony Ingle’s web site I wished him the best, kept in touch via text, as we had for so many years, talking as casually and frequently as friends do. At 68, I was concerned for his situation when I heard he had gone to the hospital… ~ Having been my hero while I was in high school, he was a coach at BYU and took me under his wing, we became actual friends once I returned from my LDS mission to Brazil in 1999 as he was in between jobs, reconnected working for my Dad for a few months in 2000 as we sat in cubicles trying to make sales calls while

Adapt

The swivel chair of 2020 continues even in 2021. Whether we call it The Pivot, the Bounce, or the “fight your way out of a corner”, we have all had to adjust, rearrange, and adapt to what now is. The Christmas and New Years break came to a welcome end as the children returned to school to give Mommy and Daddy a first day of quiet in some time…only to immediately be sent home as the whole school became quarantined; The meetings set to fly to, as Speaker in-person, in March have now been pushed to September and eventually will become virtual; The families who thought things were fine are suddenly now faced with health challenges, as the world stops around them and fight for their lives. Time to adapt! 2020 got the ball rolling – 2021 will see how gritty we really are.   The Promise is in full effect!   What is your Promise to show up every day, rain, snow or drought? You thought things would “go back to normal” with a new 2021? Back to the office, back to eating out with friends, back to the way it used to be? It may, in some ways, but

Consistency

Brush teeth Let dog out Get kids up Say prayers Put flag out on porch Check emails Surf web for day’s news Go outside for a walk Feel joy Play piano Write Call people back Get dressed for zoom meeting Work on presentation Volunteer Be on time Listen to Audible Create videos per request for sales and marketing Coach a client or peer Text a funny meme to children during school Meet with Team Eat dinner as a family Drive kids to practice Touch my wife’s back as I pass her in the hall Pick up shoes, fold blankets, go through pockets Express gratitude Close blinds Lock doors Read Plan for tomorrow Pop my Propecia Family night discussion Try to fall asleep These are simple examples of what I do consistently. There are more, and sometimes less, but these happen daily. They are my promises that I don’t even really think about. They’re automatic. You could call them habits, behaviors, patterns, systems. These are the consistencies of my life. Subconscious promises make up our lives. If I desire to change any of the above, or anything for my future, I must choose to do so and promise myself I will.
