The Egg

You are holding an egg. Carefully you have just taken it from the carton and go to crack it over the sizzling frying pan. Suddenly the egg drops to the floor. You curse quietly to yourself. You clean it up. You throw it away. You go to reach for another egg… Now, think of what has just happened. It was purely an accident, but it is significant. Think of all that went into getting that egg to you, the many times it has been handled with care, from its very moment of first light, to inspection, to carton, to truck, to store, to shelf, to cart, to bag, to trunk, to carrying it into your house, to sitting and waiting patiently to give you the gift of it’s life for your meal. And you dropped it…rendering it useless, pointless, insignificant. I’m not trying to make you feel bad, just helping your awareness of the many gifts handed to you through the efforts of many throughout your day, even week, or perhaps a pandemic. Have you handled with care the precious egg?   ~ jason hewlett  Leadership Expert * Virtual Keynote Speaker * Speaker Hall of Fame The Promise jasonhewlett.com

Giant in our City Event with Governor Herbert

Last week I had a most unique opportunity to help the Salt Lake Chamber keep their Promise to 1,300 attendees of their most prestigious award honoring The Giant in our City to Governor Gary Herbert. Rather than having the event at the beautiful Grand America Hotel in downtown SLC, due to the COVID-19 restrictions and concerns, they had the event at the creative solution of the Drive-in Theatre! Yes, everyone did their best to keep socially distanced, stayed in their cars, wore masks, we wiped down microphones and I even performed over the FM Radio transmitter with honking horns for applause.  A very wild and unique experience. I was bot the Host of the evening and the Performer. What a joy to be a part of the SL Chamber keeping The Promise to so many people who wanted to honor our great Governor at this challenging time, as they came up with the idea of making the event still work and keep everyone safe. Honored to have been a part of it, I hope you enjoy this video explaining what happened that night! Have you ever seen an event like this?  Me neither!     ~ jason hewlett  Leadership Expert

The Shot

“How did you do that Daddy?!” yelled my sons after I made yet another shot off of my head from the basketball spinning trickery. “I’m going to film you to show Mommy”, my oldest boy said, picking up my iPhone. So I kept shooting and mugging for the camera. You know, the normal shots: Spin ball, bounce off head, into the basket Spin ball on multiple fingers, bank shot from the side Spin ball, turn around jumper from half-court the usual… From the reactions of my 12 and 13 year olds this was not normal. And I’d forgotten how fun it was, as well as how hard I’d worked on this when I was young. It has been way too long since I showed anyone these old basketball tricks, but it was what I was known for in high school. I worked on them when I was 15-17 years old and mostly did them to freak people out, since I got to the point where I could make them about half of the time. I could beat anyone at H-O-R-S-E if it were a matter of most creative shots. What was really neat to me was to see the

Are LIVE Events Back?

As I walked into the auditorium it was surprising to see a group of friends gathered for a LIVE event. Seated as socially distanced as they could attempt to be, while still congregating with fellow attendees, masks were recommended but optional (our home State allows up to 99 to gather as of this writing), and I entered with mine on. Taking the floor as a Speaker was an eery but wonderful change to the computer screen and video camera I have faced in my office for the past few months during the pandemic and quarantine of COVID-19, now instead I saw people in person, could feel energy, hear laughs without it cutting out my sound…quite the difference in both worlds. I came prepared with pages of notes, as this would be a presentation I had never given, called, “Keep The Promise to Your Client in a Virtual World”, and yet, when I was introduced, the performer in me took over and I just let loose. Tried to keep with my notes but it was useless, the excitement of being in a room of people and performing once again was unleashed. Laughs, tears, stories, faces, a few points and notes

A New Career

“Wait a minute”, she shouted into the Zoom call, “I didn’t even know THAT was possible!?” Elated, she firmed up my appearance for her event on the spot, only 5 minutes into the call, having found the solution they were searching for over a month of planning and having no idea how it would work. Her greatest concern was how can we do anything like a LIVE event in a VIRTUAL way?  She knew it wasn’t possible to recreate the engagement, connection, and experience. She needed an Emcee who was world-class Entertaining without paying the usual high fees, a Speaker who could educate, inspire, and fill in the gaps, keep the flow going for the all day virtual conference, and keep it within the budget. I insisted we do a Zoom call instead of a phone call.  She reluctantly agreed, having eyeballs seared by too many Zoom calls in the past week. Asking how it was possible to tie together multiple speakers, executives, pre-recorded speeches, live presentations, awards and recognition, I could tell she was overwhelmed and had come to her wits end. After she vented her frustration at the impossibility of the task at hand, I said, “I see

Laughter at 2 A.M.

I am awakened by a sound that is not normal for this time of night. Laughter at 2 A.M. Is it outside my window?  Is someone breaking into my car or house?  Maybe toilet-papering the trees?  No, that’s not a thing anymore, that stuff is too valuable to waste. Jumping from my bed I briskly run upstairs and hear it coming from my oldest son’s room. Pressing my ear to the door I can tell what’s going on: Video Games. He must be online with his buddies and it is WAY past the allowed time, he should be done for the night. Quick scan of the floor I notice something odd – lights on in all rooms, beds missing other children. Hmmm.  Seems someone is having a party at 2 A.M. As a parent what do you do? ~ Backstory: We had 4 kids in 5 years.  The first three arrived in 26 months.  They are now 14, 13, 12. The eldest, our daughter, sleeps as far away as possible from the boys, on another floor altogether.  We tried keeping them in the same place but she broke away around the age of 11. Now there are 3 boys, 13,

The Importance of Showing Up

Have you ever had one of those nights where you absolutely could not miss your alarm going off? Whether it be a flight, a very important meeting, or something you promised your child you’d do with them, there is something so profound about how serious we take these commitments. Yesterday, I needed to be somewhere by 6 AM, and if I wasn’t there on time it would ruin a lifetime event for 6 families. How do you think I slept, even though I couldn’t fall asleep before 1 AM I was so worried about sleeping through the alarm? I woke up every hour on the hour, sleeping with one eye open, even having set 2 separate alarms (phone and old-time digital alarm clock). I finally got up at 4 AM even though alarms were set for 5:15. How serious do you take your promises and the things you said you’d do? An acquaintance said he wanted to meet up for lunch.  We confirmed the time and place an hour prior, just to be sure we were on the same page.  I texted him 10 minutes after he was late, and then again 20 minutes.  Finally at minute 29 he strolled

The Books We Read

This past week I read 3 books: “Love Boldly”, by Becky Mackintosh about embracing your LGBTQ loved ones and your faith – the story of her son, Sean, coming out after 24 years of hiding his truth; eBook version – “A Mind for Sales”, by Mark Hunter, helping with the mental aspect of how we can sell better, keep our value, make it a Win-Win for our clients and us; Audible version – “The Old Man And The Sea”, by Ernest Hemingway, about a speaker who goes too far out into the wilderness in search of keeping his career going and nearly kills himself in the pursuit of getting a really great gig, only to have the gig canceled as he comes back to shore. Oh wait, the book is about something else with a guy and a fish, but wow, it speaks to me. I read that book’s paperback version, which I bought at Hemingway’s house 2 years ago when I was there for a speech, and after leaving, finally had the courage to start writing books myself.   Every day we can choose what we consume.  Amidst the struggles of the past 3 months, and especially the
