The Moment You’ve Been Waiting For

5 years ago today I was completely unknown to a majority of my professional speaking and performing peers, and by the end of the night, in one flash moment, in one performance, I was suddenly praised by the Legends of the industry and became an “overnight success”, catapulted to the top of my profession. A week later I was in Afghanistan performing for the US Troops, 17 months later had written a post that went viral worldwide, and within 2 years was floored to be inducted as one of the youngest recipients ever in the Speaker Hall of Fame with the NSA. It is rare for me to simply refer back to a blog post, but THIS ONE I have just rediscovered from my old Entertainer site, as a pivotal and momentous occasion in my career and life history that I thought is relevant to this date. If you haven’t read it I recommend you check it out and feel of my complete enthusiasm for that night, June 30, 2014, which forever altered my career, and led to the launching of The Promise as we know it. What does this have to do with you?  I hope you’ll notice

The Team Player Promise

Awaiting my turn backstage I watched as an entire events team was freaking out, running back and forth, chatter on headsets, teleprompter operators with hands in the air, show producers pacing, every team player not sure what to do. The first celebrity speaker had taken 20 minutes longer than allotted, now the second speaker, an executive, was 15 minutes over. I was scheduled to do an hour following “Long-wind” and “Breathless” (my new nicknames for the speakers before me), sandwiched between the ever sacred Expo Hall opening at 11 AM that would make about 50 Sponsors pull their advertising dollars for future events if they didn’t get their time. The client approached cautiously, with fear in her eyes, as to how I was going to take the news that I had to be done at 10:55 AM and would have to cut my hour to…whatever time this speaker ended. Before she could say a word I shook my head, held open my arms, gave her a big hug, and said, “I’m so sorry you’re going through this.  I know what you’re up against.  I’m on your team.  I can do as long or as little as you need to

Happy Father Figure Day

We must have been 12 years old when our scout troop first went skiing with our new Boy Scout’s scoutmaster Rick.  He seemed cool, had a great manly beard, nice dark full head of hair, a friendly smile, lived in a big house, and wore perfectly fitted clothes to Church. Thinking we were all pretty hot stuff as pre-teens, growing up in Park City, UT, where they give you a week off of school during the winter called “Ski Week” just to perfect your skills on the famous snowy mountains, we went up to the top of one of the toughest runs at Park City Resort and looked down at the moguls before us. We pretended to not be scared, but this run was extra crazy, if I recall it was called Thaynes Canyon. To a kid the moguls were mountains unto themselves, and watching the best of the best try this run and eventually biff it into a yard sale as we laughed from above riding up the lift, always reminded us to take a different route down. As our scoutmaster, Rick, looked at us he said, “Guys, you can do this”, he must have sensed our nervousness.

Elton John – The Rocketman

Have you seen the new movie “Rocketman“, about Sir Elton John? I haven’t seen the movie yet, but as someone who impersonated Elton John with the Las Vegas “Legends in Concert” way back in 2002 (pre-beard, pre-kids, pre-speaker status), I learned some powerful things about him that I share in my keynote presentations, which allows me to also do one of his songs in the speech for some audience engagement and entertainment. Did you know that pretty much every word Elton John’s ever sung hasn’t been written by him? Did you know that he writes the songs, music, melody, and of course is the singer, but the words never were one of his gifts, as he’s talked about for years in interviews. The importance of collaborating with the right people is what has made Elton’s career.   When I teach IDENTIFY * CLARIFY * MAGNIFY I use the example of Reginald Dwight and Bernie Taupin meeting, a singer/songwriter, and a lyricist.  They clarified talents, collaborated, and became one of the most significant duos in music history. Bernie wrote the words, Reg wrote the melodies, played the song, and sang it – eventually changing his name to the more catchy Rock

5 Summers

“We have 5 Summers left, Honey”, I said to my little Ella, 13 years old.  “What do you want to do with this one?” She looked at me surprised.  “What do you mean we have 5 left?” she asked. “I mean while you’re a kid, as my little girl in this our little family.  How amazing is that?  We won’t get this back, so what should we do?” I said. She looked off from the co-captain seat as we sailed down the road, her thoughts consumed by the roar of the motorhome, and suddenly the realization she was growing up quicker than she noticed. Have you ever considered that you only have 18 Summers with your kids? I mean, if you’re lucky and all goes as hoped with life, you still only have very precious little time with your kiddos as young ones. Some of you are reading this saying, “Oh yeah, we’re going on 36 Summers with our son, we can’t get him to move out…”   Well, to those I’m sorry 😉  But seriously, think about this most incredible time we call life! What will our summer consist of?  We’ve decided to keep The Promise and live it
