Facing The Fear: Promise to Self

In the movie “The Wizard of Oz”, little Toto the dog discovers the all and powerful Oz behind the curtain. Oz is freaked, tells them “Don’t mind the man behind the curtain!!!” Well, I’m no Oz great and powerful, but here on this blog I pull the curtain back willingly with the intention of giving you a glimpse behind the make believe that is our social media appearances and perfect little lives, so that you catch perhaps something familiar in my vulnerability. As the funny guy on stage, who then takes the audience to a place of authenticity and surprise with insights unexpected, here is my soul and greatest challenge, bare for your bravery to kick in where mine lacks. On my Calendar lives a “To Do” that is so imposing, so terrifying, so Raptor, that it has crippled me for years. Yes, I have had the same daily To Do on my calendar for years with no end in sight. Daily I return to bed disappointed that I didn’t even try to tackle this To Do. I feel pathetic every night I lay me down to sleep, no matter if I got a standing ovation for thousands of

Becoming Legendary Leaders: The Promise to Mentor

“Your son has some, well…. challenges,” the teacher began. “Such as,” asked the mother. “Well, reading is an issue in multiple areas, especially out loud and comprehension.  Same with math, the concepts just aren’t working in his mind.  His writing is compromised and his handwriting is illegible.  He seems fine with social skills and making friends, but we are a bit concerned he is doing odd things with his face and mouth which are distracting to others,” she continued. “What can we do to help him?” the mother inquired. “We recommend first you stay after class and assist him in extra reading, or we will need to hold him back.  First grade is an excellent time to hold a child back who is struggling or behind.  We also recommend a speech therapist, who would double as a psychologist due to some of the issues we are noticing,” the teacher concluded. This may sound like the beginning of the movie Forrest Gump, but it was actually my 1st Grade teacher, Ms. Davis, attempting to break it to my Mother that I had a few issues.  Genetic and learned. Dang. So she did what any Mom would do: She packed me a sack, put it

JetBlue Signature Service

“Welcome aboard!  Are you Mr. Hewlett by chance?”  Surprised to be recognized, I said yes and was promptly handed a few items: A blanket, neck pillow, and this handwritten note.     Seated in my preferred exit row aisle seat for the 5 hour flight home, I was asked if I wanted a snack or drink before the rest of the passengers boarded the plane. “Wow”, I thought, “so this is what a keynote speaker who speaks on Customer Service feels like!”   I had just delivered the Closing Keynote for JetBlue’s Big 6 event to leadership attendees in Orlando, FL, received with roaring laughter, many tears, and finally a rousing and lengthy standing ovation.  Greeted on stage I was gifted a JetBlue airplane statue they coined “JasonBlue” and I suggested could be “JetHew”.     The speech was a mighty success, and the first time I’d had the chance to deliver my new Keynote, Cultivating Signature Service. JetBlue loved it so much their leadership requested I deliver the same speech to every department in the future. “We’ll be in touch”, “Do you have these dates open”, and “We’ll be seeing you again soon for many more events together”, are

Moving On From The Usual

My wife & I snuck off to our favorite breakfast place for a quick bite before my flight out. Yes, it was a detour, but this has been our go-to for the past few years. Reality quickly took a turn from our expected outcome: The usually fresh biscuits came out as over-cooked and stale; the service was less than inspired; and then oh my heavens, a bug on the arugula? Upon receiving the bill we were surprised to see just a small discount off the meal for the insect surprise, as they figured we’d be back like we always have been. That was when we realized each visit over the past few months had been less than stellar, that this place has taken a turn for the worse, and we’ve just overlooked it until today. We aren’t returning to our favorite place, and now I’m even writing a blog about how much we don’t like it anymore. This is a Promise broken to the Audience/Customer, and we are not returning – it is now officially unable to be undone! I call The Promise “The Engagement Experience” for this very reason: You have ONE shot! And if the customer returns,
