Legendary Leaders are Readers & Writers

What is the top need from today’s meeting professionals when they reach out to me to speak at their event?  This is a summary of their typical needs after some explaining on a call: “We need someone entertaining enough to engage our employees in a dark conference hall, but not too entertaining!…addressing jet lagged travelers while crossing all demographics, who are jaded and have seen every kind of speaker, who are bored of a lecturer and experts in our industry, but a speaker who seems like they are a part of our industry, and can pull attendees away from their phones by getting attention for at least the time you’re on stage, and help our audience feel connected to one another through laughter, while learning something, and becoming better leaders.  You’ll have about an hour.” OK – roger that. Yes folks, miracles are requested and granted regularly  🙂 But seriously, how is it possible all of this can be met?  (here’s the video we send them to understand something of what we do on stage for an audience)   As I research why this skillset is such a challenge for an events professional to find among all of the

The Promise to Adapt

Last week our family came home to a dishwasher that had flooded our kitchen, warped the wood floors, water seeped into the basement, and the ensuing mess that creates. Insurance adjusters, disaster cleanup professionals, holes drilled in the basement ceiling, cracks in our floors, high-powered fans and de-humidifiers now cover our home, as we determine what should be ripped out first. The dishwasher is the casualty, and as my mother-in-law repeated over and over, “Welcome to home ownership!”  (we have lived here for 14 years, so we are grateful she is finally welcoming us to this lifestyle 😉  ) As this was all happening in our kitchen I had just finished writing a poem for my wife and was preparing a song for her Grandpa’s funeral, Ray Limberg, one of the greatest men I’ve ever known and easily the best grandparent I’ve ever seen.  His legend is enormous, the things he did to engage and be present in the lives of his grandchildren are astounding and will live on. The end of an era, we walked through his home and collected some bolo ties and belt buckles in his memory before they empty it all out and put it

“Sell It All”: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

When you are the most decorated player in the history of your sport, you would think it would be important to keep every accomplishment, trophy, ring, and accolade by your side to relish the memory until your dying day. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball’s greatest star collectively (no disrespect to Mr. Bill Russell or Michael Jordan) from high school, college, and the NBA, has other ideas, and in my opinion, this is the ultimate Promise of Perspective story. He just put up for auction nearly everything he owns in order to make a difference for kids. Mind you, we often hear stories like this of desperate former athletes needing to fix their financial situation. Not so with Kareem, a savvy businessman and philanthropist, he is giving with a promise to help others now while he has the chance to see the impact. In the article on ESPN he says, “When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple: Sell it all. Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold

Leaving Neverland: Saying Goodbye to Michael Jackson

The Moonwalk is what set my career in motion. I knew that if a gawky, awkward, dweeby, girlfriend-less kid like me could figure out that incredibly beautiful, other-worldly move, it was game over. For an entire summer I wore out my VHS tapes of “Motown 25 Special”, “Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller”, “Moonwalker”, and every MTV performance I could capture, rewinding and pausing each magical movement Michael Jackson did with his feet, legs, shoulders, neck, head, arms, hands…sometimes dancing in my basement for 12 hours a day. My parents eventually made me put a piece of plywood down as there were scratch marks all over the parquet floor. I made money dancing on street corners in Utah (which dancing on street corners is not necessarily a thing in Utah), by performing in parking lots, as my friends and I put our cars in a circle, shining headlights my way, with “Billie Jean” and “Smooth Criminal” blaring at teens lined up for their Friday summer night sno-shack snow cone. We made enough money to go to the movies…the dollar movies, but still!  It changed my teen years. The career-defining moment came when I was on stage at a religious university in

The Promise of The Utah Jazz

I’ve been a fan of the Utah Jazz my entire life. They are what I call a Promise Keeping company. Promises are kept when leaders know how to lead well and correctly. Larry H. Miller and his amazing wife, Gail, led the team to great heights, and Gail continues on since Larry’s passing in taking the team to even new heights. If you keep up to speed on current events you know the controversy that spawned a fan being banned FOR LIFE as of this past Monday night’s game, of which I attended as a guest of the team in now working with them on fan experience and The Promise of meeting expectations and performance during every aspect of the game. Actions were uncalled for by the fan, and are unacceptable. I applaud the Utah Jazz for taking quick action, addressing the problem, and reminding their audience (client and fan base) of their promise, what the expectations are at the arena, and if you are a Jazz Fan how you are expected to behave in the Utah Jazz home. And then this. Today I received in my email inbox the following letter from the team, Gail Miller, Owner, and

US Military Airplane Seat Story

I posted this the other day on Facebook and LinkedIn and it was quite the popular post, being shared by many supporters of our US Military. The only reason I posted it was to say Thank You to those who serve & protect, and to remind others we have a Promise to do what we can, even the smallest gestures, to show appreciation whenever possible. Thank You RootsTech

This past Saturday morning I thought I was simply introducing the world’s greatest ukulele player, Jake Shimabukuro, and then closing out the final session as Emcee of RootsTech, the largest genealogy conference on the planet. However, as I settled in to gather my thoughts for the words I might say in half an hour I suddenly heard, “Jason, we need you on stage right now.  Can you do a 30-minute show before the session starts?” Rushed to the stage I winged my best set, accidentally not having warmed up my voice, while singing, doing impressions, telling jokes, and keeping the 10,000 person audience of children, parents and grandparents happy while the session got closer to the telecast start time, about to roll live, shown to hundreds of thousands around the globe. Thus is the life of the Emcee. I only Emcee a few events per year, and those are usually for clients that commit to having me return year after year. The challenge of preparation for these types of events is enormous, and a giant promise is made between the client and me: Trust me and you will get more than you paid for.     Over the past

Your 2019 New Years Resolutions (Come March…)

Who is still hitting the gym by March? Come on my friend, you’ve got this! New Years Resolutions are usually dead and gone come the first week of March. In January there is literally never a spot at the gym parking lot, come March I can drive right into the lobby it’s so empty. Hope you’re hanging in strong. Here’s what I’ve found about my relationship with resolutions, goals, and these commitments: Mine are never strong enough to keep going. A goal that is set and missed can always be re-set. A goal also seems to have a deadline.  As in: Once it’s hit, I AM DONE! Many goals are able to be accomplished and some people are capable of still trudging out in the cold, snow, even before 5 AM to do their committed work-outs, or to stop eating sugar for 2 months, or to be more focused in the office and stay off Facebook… However, eventually those goals wear off, or we simply snap and eat the entire bread basket at dinner out with friends and next thing you know you are laying in bed cursing the ceiling fan with your pants unbuttoned, knowing you will not
