Question: What do the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and Chewbacca, of StarWars fame, have in common?
Answer: We expect one thing of them, that they keep their Promise – deliver their Signature Move – or else we wonder if we’re seeing the real thing.
Even as he has been gone for 7 years now, if I ask an audience, “What was Michael Jackson’s Signature Move?” They all collectively yell out, “MOONWALK!”
Here’s my attempt to honor the Great MJ
In 2015 audiences were breathless and ecstatic upon the arrival of StarWars VII The Force Awakens when Han Solo and Chewbacca come aboard the Millennium Falcon. As quickly as they appear on screen we are given the obligatory Chewy throaty, “Gggg-ggg-g-ghh!” growl sound that assures us it’s really him.
Why is this so important?
Because these are their personal brands. I call it a Signature Move. Just as Michael Jordan had the tongue wag and game-winning shot, Steve Jobs continued to change the technology game from Apple, to Pixar, to Apple again, and just as Abe Lincoln was known for his top hat and eloquent speeches, The Greats Keep The Promise and have Signature Moves.
The Top Companies on earth have them, most likely the company you have started or work for has theirs as well. Question is: What is it and how is it delivered consistently?
Chick-Fil-A has cornered the market on chicken sandwiches AND close on Sundays, so they have two very powerful branding Signature Moves that people expect and admire, coupled with amazing tasting food and customer service, this is a brand our family loves. Delta has a SkyMiles program that keeps all of us coming back, even when they lose our bags or delay a flight to wait for ….whomever….everything else that drives me crazy about them keeps me flying with them because of the SkyMiles program!
So what is YOUR personal Signature Move? What is it that you do that helped you:
Keep Your Job
Get the Promotion
Win the Award
And if you aren’t growing in your work, or succeeding at some level, what is holding you back? Often it is because we are not utilizing our Signature Move enough!
When we think of famous people it is easy to spot theirs, or considering our favorite companies, but what if yours is something a little less “showbiz”? To be honest, it probably is.
My wife, for example, has a few different Signature Moves that may seem normal, but she is known for all of the following among her friends, family, and community, and expected to share them including:
- Hosting the best community events in the neighborhood
- Capable of taking a normal recipe, such as tomato soup, and creating something beautiful of it with a dollop of cottage cheese and hint of Sriracha
- Able to find treasures at yard sales and discount stores, bring them home and sand, stain, paint them to a newfound glory
These are her multiple Signature Moves. I bet you have yours, too.
But the secret is this: Share them. Don’t hide them!
If you went to a Michael Jackson concert in the 80’s and he danced and sang as sweat rained down for 3 hours straight, but didn’t do the Moonwalk, you would be upset! But, since he’s a LEGEND, he delivers it every time, because that’s what Legends do: They deliver the Promise to the Audience as mentioned HERE.
If you bought a Chewbacca mask and it didn’t do the “Gggg-gg-ghhh!” sound you would want your money back! Remember her? She got her kid’s college paid for because she laughed about the sound coming from this mask, video’d it, went viral, and wallah! Woah.
So I ask: What is YOUR Signature Move on a Personal level AND a Business level and are you delivering The Promise to share it?
